Cruyff was a great player - the Dutch total football side of 1974 were fabulous and it was sad that they could not finish as winners because they had been by far the best side in the tournament. Apart from Cruyff and his all-round ability up front, Johan Neeskens was a terrific powerhouse in midfield as well as other great players like Johnny Rep(who turfed NUFC out of the UEFA Cup in 1977), Arie Haan and Rudi Krol were all part of a great unit. They set out to humiliate the Germans in the final and after Cruffy won that early penalty, they attempted to toy with them...always a dangerous game.

Holland reached the Final again in Argentina 4 years later, but Cruyff hadn't gone with them...maybe they would have pulled it off if he had.

Too early a death for such a great player and intelligent guy - he will be missed.

Quite a few high-profile people and stars have passed away in the last year or so.....

Can pundits stop banging on about the Cruyff turn, nothing against it but he shaped and defined what we expect of good positive football, and even ignoring his legacy as both player and coach was a better player than just that guy who had that trick move

Yeah. He'll no doubt be turning in his grave.

The unusual thing about Cruyff was that despite that gangly physique, he was able to show the kind of explosive power that you associate with smaller, stockier players with a low centre of gravity, like Pele and Maradona.

His change of pace and direction was exceptional. A feature of the Cruyff turn was that he was five yards past that Swedish defender before the poor sap realised what had happened. It wasn't just a matter of clever footwork.

  • 1 year later...

Amsterdam Arena to be renamed the Johan Cruijff arena. :)

Saying that if he was still alive he'd probably tell them to do one due to how much he detested the board.

Would have been more fitting if they had spelt his name right.
