Championship Planning

priority is getting a decent striker in.

Probably be ripped apart for this but we could do a lot worse than Dwight Gayle for our attempted promotion charge.

Not likely. Pardew is going to have a similar lightbulb moment to Allardyce when he realises that a striker who scores is more important than a one who does everything else but.

What are the chances to have Barton back to the team?

Based on what he said last night on Talksport, absolutely zero

Our best players will leave for other PL teams?

What to you think that should be our signings?

He said that Steve McLaren wanted to sign him but Derek Llambias said absolutely no chance.

Barton was open to the move and was prepared to bury the hatchet with Mike Ashley but the club weren't prepared to have him back under any circumstances.

Need a spine of solid players who probably should have a history or knowledge of playing with cloggers. Should just buy a mix of the best youngsters in the league with a bunch of reliable, productive older lads. Leadbitter has been in the team of year the past two seasons so it can't be too hard to find players.

Douglas suggested a few names in his article today - Nakhi Wells, Johann Berg Gudmundsson, Richard Keogh and Adam Reach

:dontknow:

How many divisions are we dropping?

Without meaning to be arrogant, we don't want to load the squad with Championship standard players. If Rafa stays we're more likely to attract better players than you'd usually expect for a Championship club. Rafa wants a "strong" team so we go for promotion at the first attempt. We'll probably keep a few players you would've expected to leave, get new players of a good standard (some decent players may be willing to play in the Championship for one season if they expect to get promotion) and get the pick of the loan players available.

i was just considering this actually, i wonder what way he'll go - you'd imagine he'll have some spanish players targetted (certainly on loan) but they'll have to be up for the physical side of that division, will he go heavy on youth from what he already has (armstrong, aarons, mbabu etc.)?

intruiging actually, what a manager of his calibre will do now he's dropped from CL games/qualification challenges to the fucking championship

This all day long. Obviously there are financial considerations and cloth will have to be cut to an extent, but if we're serious about going for promotion* we need to be giving ourselves as much of a headstart over the other teams in this division in terms of squad quality and not be shy about it.

I don't think, for example, we need to be pissing about going into the season with Armstrong as the first choice striker only to realise by October he's not good enough and we're writing the season off because we don't score enough goals.

We'll also need players with guts and character. Our away record last season was horrendous which points to a lack of mental strength and if that's not sorted it could be our downfall.

*goes without saying this is a big "if" with these jokers in charge.

Weird, Llambias left the club 3 years ago. I wonder why he had any say on whether Barton should or should not join us last year? I didn't hear the interview but that sounds a bit like Joey visiting make believe land tbh.
