Wor Flags are absolutely superb at capturing fan sentiment at a moment in time.

Given the friendly fire at Man United, Palace, Man City and Wolves, perhaps a message of "we don't demand a club that wins, we demand a club that wins all of the time and in dominant fashion" would go down nicely and give the lads something to think about?

I think it’s the opposite actually, to a point anyway.

The fact that we’re a good team now, has massively increased expectations, and with expectation comes complacency. Or just the fact that these occasions are now viewed as the norm, and not a special occasion. Last week’s semi final a good example.

Of course there are plenty of other factors that have been well-documented previously, but I feel like the above is one of the biggest contributors, even if it is just human nature to a degree.

Yes agree that's a factor, but as a fan base too many are too quick to react negatively to a below par performance. Players have always said that the crowd can play a part in how they perform at SJP. It would be good if we were up for it from hereon in, starting tonight. Not holding my breath though.

Fans have every right to voice concerns, that’s football. But it’s still gutting to see expectations completely take over what should be a really special time for the club.

Honestly, this is probably the best spell in my lifetime as a NUFC fan, and yet the moaning and getting on players’ backs feels just as bad as ever. It just shows that relative success doesn’t always equal happiness. Nights like this should have St James’ rocking. It’d be such a letdown if it was flat tonight.

Fair play to the fans at Wolves who got behind Elanga. May be coincidental but his peformance, although short, was an improvement on what we've seen so far.

If the atmosphere is shit tonight then its time to put the flags away for good I reckon. All it is doing is masking the shit atmosphere to the majority of our crowd who go and get their picture for instagram then sit in silence.

*This isnt a dig at the likes of Heron who are absolute legends for doing what they do and have done.

It needs to prompt a good look at the 35,000 season ticket holders who are the majority and the root cause of the deteriorating atmosphere.

Sitting there in silence or moaning for 25-30 games a season over 40 years doesn’t make you a hardcore supporter, it makes you an arsehole expectant spectator. Go watch it in the fucking house or the pub and let a new enthusiastic generation with some energy come through.

Said it before, the flags are amazing but they don't really impact the atmosphere during the game in any meaningful way. It's just not realistic. The flags go away and everyone resumes their normal behaviour.

Agreed 100%

It's crazy really, just makes me think that the default condition of football fans is to be unhappy no matter what.

Yep. So its pretty pointless having them. Flags and displays in europe/Scotland are where the singing ends are.

Mebbes Just stick a few up in the corner. Or even a couple of banners bemoaning the atmosphere

I wouldn't go that far, I still think it's a good show of support and I'm sure it boosts the players as well. We just can't rely on it creating a good atmosphere actually during the match.

Also I'm sure the same people doing the flags are the people trying to get songs going.

What do you suggest? Realistically?

I can’t think of anything other than creating standing/singing areas and moving people about.

 tell me that's a joke.

There's immense value in the flag displays - they're legitimately one of the best things about the club - but agree that their influence on the atmosphere is probably negligible.

It does feel like the flags and half arsed singing along to Hey Jude = good atmosphere to some.

Wor Flags should come out and say they’re not bothering until people in the stands bother.

Mebbes pointless was a bit strong. It wasn't aimed at a dig at wor flags in anyway

I just think the displays are masking the shit atmosphere to plenty people in the ground. They think waving a flag for 2 minutes is job done for them then sit down and say fuck all other than a moan and groan

It must be disheartening to the likes of Heron who shouts his lungs out for 90 minutes in the corner

If they’re of that mindset, do you think not waving a flag for two mins will result in them not sitting down and saying fuck all?

You’ve got it in one. More standing, preferably large swathes of the Gallowgate. Move the older generation out to accommodate this. The Corner had a great atmosphere every time I’ve been in it - this is what needs replicating across more areas of the ground. The NIMBY cunts might moan but it’s for the better of the team.

I’m not sure you can move someone just cos they’re ‘old’ like, but I take your point. If safe standing is extended, you’d hope anyone that doesn’t want to stand would opt to move, rather than just remain there and be miserable about what’s going on around them.

Appreciate from the club’s pov it’s not the easiest thing in the world to facilitate significant seat movement, but it’s probably something they have to suck up and do. Offer fuck that move a 10/20% discount on next season to try and placate some of the likely ill-feeling.
