Jacob Murphy

I love the way he has played the game since coming back in, with how he has kept it simple and played like an old school winger.  He has some pretty glaring weaknesses.  But we/he usually masks them fairly well.  I like that he is a bit of a throwback and isn't afraid to have a shot or chuck an early cross in.  Last night, his crossing was pretty dreadful and aimless.  But the volume and how he isn't afraid to keep trying it is more of a positive than a negative.

It makes me hope for a right footed player to come in as our new RW option.  Not sure how many teams play with genuine right winger types like Murphy now.  So not sure how viable that is.  But the balance of our side is better with him and Tino staying wide.  With Gordon on the other side getting licence to roam and drift inside.

Isak's form has been massively helped by Murphy/a right footer on that side, as well.

He's getting some good shots off as well as his dangerous crossing, he's a clean striker of the ball

Yep.  We quite often work the ball and he gets into an area where the pass for him is perfect for a right footer.  Against Leicester a few times, Ipswich, one where he clipped the post, I forget against who?  It was at home, Villa?  Sa made a top class save from him last night from a similar angle.

i think its going slowly back to old school.

its already started to a lesser  extent at citeh.

get the winger out wide and put the ball into the box.

the coming inside and playing side to side in front of the box isnt working as well.

luckily we can mix it up with murphy on one side and gord on the other.

Agreed, or if we have a left footed, Mbueme type winger, then using Tino as the wide option who can overlap and get a cross in

Part of the reason I think Tino hasn't done as well offensively, is having Murphy there doing his thing

His ball striking is absolutely incredible if we’re being honest.

This has always been one of the problems though, he's got the tools to be a much better player. But maybe we have been expecting too much. If you just take him for what he is and accept his football won't always be silky or super visionary, he can still do some damage allied to giving it 100% defensively as well.

I think yes and no with Tino. He is great driving forward on the ball and still provides the option on the overlap. He is quick and always a willing runner.

He just always looks like getting a low cross or a cutback into the box is really difficult for him.

There was one last night where we won a corner and it seemed harder to hit the man than get it in the massive space known as ‘the corridor of uncertainty’.

I think Tino’s game is all about his one on one defending and the energy and physicality he brings. His passing and how he is in the final third doesn’t make me think he’ll start chipping in with many assists like Murphy has and like Trippier used to.

He i still very young mind, and has bags of talent, I could easily see it being something he adds to his game over the next few years

Really don't know what to make of Murphy.

Not long back I classed him as not even PL standard.

And I still can't help but think that at times. Often when the ball gets to him you can just tell he's not on the same level as those around him.

But then he keeps putting in the goals and assists and seems to have an almost telepathic connection with Isak.

Really pleased it's working for him. As previously stated there's maybe an argument that his form means we can go for a younger RW to develop but my fear is if he doesn't keep this form up his shortcomings will be all too evident again.

It really helps we have arguably some of the best players around him in certain positions, really elevates his level.

As per the post above yours, talk of a purple patch is misguided. He’s been quite consistently decent for a while now. Obviously we need to upgrade on him eventually, but Murphy is a perfect example of a system player right now, and would cost a fortune (that we probably won’t be able to spend) to upgrade.

Always a place for not-great players in a squad with worldies elevating everyone. Leicester won the league with Danny Simpson and Danny Drinkwater alongside Mahrez and Kante. [emoji38]

If a summer signing was having his winter we'd be laughing. He's won the job for the foreseeable imo.

Definitely a more interesting call, comparing it to people saying we should have sold Miggy and Wilson when they were playing well, for example.

Depends if you think there’ll be a reversion to the mean at any point or if this is a genuine level he’s reached and can maintain.

At the very least it means we don’t need to rush a RW signing if we can’t get them until summer.
