Guest Howaythetoon
They won it in 86 of course and have made finals, but have Argentina ever been a great team over any length of time? Considering the talent they have had to call on over the years, much like with England, I always found them utterly boring.
Tooj
They won it in '78 too.

Guest firetotheworks
Argentina in '06 were the exact opposite of boring like. They were the best team to watch in the tournament by an absolute mile and they'd have won it if Peckerman hadn't been a complete idiot vs Germany imo. Tooj
What’s wrong with Argentina? We now value ‘balls’ more than talent https://www.theguardian.com/football/2018/jun/25/argentina-what-is-wrong-lionel-messi-football?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_WhatsApp This infernal racket conditions everything, a deafening noise that surrounds everything and made the Argentinian people believe that if Messi does not win a World Cup he will never be Maradona; that made Messi himself believe it. Thirty-three titles later, Messi has taken that message to heart and when the World Cup starts he becomes a tortured soul who carries the fierce demands of 45 million people on his shoulders. And yet it’s not true: Messi has defended Argentina’s footballing pride like no one else for 15 years now and he has done so with an astonishing, scandalous consistency. But that perception became received wisdom and Messi is treated as if he was any old player by journalists who demand an excellence from him they cannot even dream of. Yep, they are the finest example of a manager fucking up a team being the reason they didn't win a tournament IMO. Pekerman is great but that day he massively fucked up. Yep, they are the finest example of a manager fucking up a team being the reason they didn't win a tournament IMO. Pekerman is great but that day he massively fucked up. I’ll never forget it. Had a Crespo to be top scorer and Argentina to win the tournament double bet on. 1-0 up with 20 minutes to go and the guy takes his star striker Crespo and the team’s playmaker Riquelme off. Brings on some holding midfielder and fucking Roque Shitty Cruz. 1-0 up lads, what could possibly go wrong?! Then Germany equalize and your two best players are no longer on the field. Oh, you also had to make a sub due to your injured keeper (before the other subs) so you have no subs left. Not that you’d want to bring that young Messi fella on anyway. Just got angry again just thinking about it.
Guest firetotheworks
Putting my hatred for Pardew and that 1-2 home loss to Reading to one side for a moment, objectively it's the worst managerial decision I've ever witnessed like. Even if it was 2-0 and not 1-0 it wouldn't be that bad, even it hadn't been against the Germans it might not have been that bad, taking off any other players in that moment might not have been as bad, bringing on Messi might not have been that bad, doing it with five minutes to go and not twenty minutes to go and it might not have been that bad. He ticked every single stupid box. Even at the time it was obvious what was going to happen, it has to be up there as one of the most retarded managerial decisions of all time. Taking off your best two players, neither of them for Messi, with a 1 goal lead, and twenty minutes to go, against Germany, in a World Cup knockout game. It's pretty much suicide. Mole_Toonfan
I genuinely forgot he took Crespo off too, god that's even worse than i remembered. I remember Messi staying on the bench and Riquelme coming off extremely vividly though.

Guest firetotheworks
Nigeria are playing with 433 so will outnumber them in the middle, where they're already at their weakest. It's also a formation that doesn't get the best out of Messi. Unless there's a tactical plan, it just seems like a really basic error.

Mole_Toonfan
Argentina playing with a 442 apparently At least their team looks capable of providing service to Messi and Higuain. I don't think they'll be as isolated today.
