He just needs a fresh start at another club. Was completely baffled by those who claimed that £15m or whatever wouldn't be enough and we should demand more for him? He's just not very good at football unfortunately, he'll graft all day if he's fit and his attitude is spot on but he offers so little these days. Just take the best offer in the summer, shake him by the hand and wish him the best. He doesn't deserve abuse but I'm not going to blindly applaud consistent really, really poor play either

There's a lot of hyperbole in here as usual but even as someone very forgiving I'm kinda losing the will with him. I can't think of the last time he played and wasn't pretty shit. He was awful against Bromley and not much (still a bit) better tonight. That extra half second he needs really stands out when you're watching Tonali and Bruno week in week out.

That said - and I know this is a cliché - but we do need a squad, so I'm not desperate to sell him. We play with three midfielders, which means you need six to choose from if you intend to go deep in all comps. If he wants a move and/or it's appealing from a PSR perspective, then fair enough, but no Longstaff means our key players getting flogged more than they ought to.

These are the games we need him for, so it's really disappointing he doesn't perform in them, when he really should be above the level of the opposition.

Doesn't bode well for us going forward at all if we keep him.

I’ve never rated him although I have to admit he had a bit of a purple patch two seasons ago.

I’ve always thought he would be a perfect championship player at Watford or Similar.

Maybe join his brother in Toronto.

His brain isn’t quick enough in tight spaces and constantly gets it stuck in his feet.

DILLY DALLY TASTIC

Hope his head's ok. Had a poor showing against Bromley as well.

Looks pre Howe in his self confidence.

You can almost see it in his body language.

Obviously didn't help when his Grandad didn't back him to come on against Liverpool in the video his brother made.

Still to this day don't understand why they allowed that to be aired

I know we need a squad and we do need 6 midfielders for this system. But there’s not much point in having him around if he looks nowhere near the standard required against League 2 and League 1 (Championship) opposition.

I’m glad he managed to contribute in the end and after the 3rd goal. He did look better. But when we were building decent possession and attacks. All night it would break down when it got to him.

He’s nowhere near good enough in a team that wants more than 30-40% of the ball per game.

It was always going to happen at some point with the vast majority of the pre-takeover players. But we’ve out-grown him as a team.

Lad has barely played so can’t be match fit. I also feel he's probably a confidence player and looks low on it atm. Run of games would probably help.  But it's difficult to see him starting in the league atm.

Raises and lowers his game to who we're playing. Lack of match fitness and confidence weigh heavier on him than other players too. For what it's worth, he wasn't alone in lowering his performance last night, first half especially, we were collectively shite.

In fairness we tend to look a bit hit and miss every time we seem to heavily rotate - maybe that’s down to a lack of quality in the latter part of the squad which needs bulking over the summer with a few going out

Think describing us as collectively shite for that first half performance is harsh.  Disjointed to start but actually we controlled the game well after an early set back. Those were exceptionally difficult conditions for a patchwork team.

Any team does though, that's the thing. It's very unusual for a side to heavily rotate and maintain the same standard of performance.

I am a big supporter of Longstaff and always have been but sadly, he's probably 6th in the pecking order for CMs that can influence the game (from an attackng perspective) now. As Howe says, he holds very different qualities to the other midfielders and they all bring something. For me, I'd bring him on ahead of Willock or Miley when we're trying to see a game out and tighten up, but when we're trying to impose ourselves on the game it'd be Miley or Willock. Our best 3 very much remain Bruno, Sandro and Joelinton.

Folk are very fast to sell him down the river mind...

We created little and got two dubious goals, we could have quite easily conceded a few more too. We weren't anywhere near good enough out of possession. One thing to have possession but it's another thing to have control, in my opinion.

I disagree. They pressed aggressively and we coped with it well. Prior to the wonder strike we were well in control of the game. Not sure what was dubious about the goals beyond did the ball cross the line on the first.

They had a deflected goal for the first, a cross that was headed wide and the side foot chance, but they were always going to have chances. We play a direct 4-3-3 and the most important player in terms of tightening up the defensive performance of the team (Tonali) wasn’t on the pitch.
