It's very unusual for a side to heavily rotate and maintain the same standard of performance. I am a big supporter of Longstaff and always have been but sadly, he's probably 6th in the pecking order for CMs that can influence the game (from an attackng perspective) now. As Howe says, he holds very different qualities to the other midfielders and they all bring something. For me, I'd bring him on ahead of Willock or Miley when we're trying to see a game out and tighten up, but when we're trying to impose ourselves on the game it'd be Miley or Willock. Our best 3 very much remain Bruno, Sandro and Joelinton. Folk are very fast to sell him down the river mind... I just think with Longstaff the ceiling has already been reached - great servant, great bloke - sometimes a change can benefit, plus he’s at a stage where he should be playing week in week out for someone CM is an area I highlighted that we need someone to supplement the quality of Tonali and Bruno

Pablo Posted Sunday at 11:13 Share Posted Sunday at 11:13 We under-value him. Always have since it turned out he wasn’t a £50m player good enough for Manchester Utd. Hes a fine understudy, good character, home grown which is useful for Europe. Not good enough to start regular, and I don’t want to rely on him. However it will be very rare the reason we lose is solely down to him. There are 10 other players on the pitch too. Would be a good pick up for a lot of teams. Happy to sell, but only when it suits the club. I trust Eddie to make that call.

A couple of seasons ago I thought we had a star in the making but he just hasn't kicked on. He looks like a confidence player and that looks completely shot. Not getting games might be the reason like but he was a passenger until his assist yesterday. If he doesn't bring anything then he's really not good enough for the bench either. Would be a solid Championship player though. Shame because he seems a cracking lad.

We also not going to have a Bruno/Tonali level player for each position. However if it seems like it's his time to get it now Miggy has gone is because he's an obvious weak link in the side. I was done with him last season and nights like last night against lesser opposition does not sway me that we should just take a fee and part ways. Hopefully a fresh start will do him some good. Says more about the press watching the games than how he actually played. I’m grateful for everything Lobby has given the club but between last season and seeing him v Bromley and Birmingham now, the regression in his game has become quite stark. This time a year ago I watched him against Fulham in the 4th round and he was effective. Fast-forward a year and he was clumsy, passive and frightened yesterday. Sean has done years as a brilliant servant for the club, with some truly special memories like PSG. However the club is striving to progress and there are always going to be those like Miggy, Lobby and Callum who get left behind. Look at Micah Richards, Hart and others at Citeh. Doesn’t mean they leave on bad terms, genuinely most of us wish them the best and thank them, but PSR means no more passengers and romanticism as you can’t have people not pulling weight on decent wages. His game hasn’t regressed it’s his confidence that’s regressed. It’s up to the supporters to help with that yet many seem to fail to see it that way. Like him or loathe him whilst he’s wearing our colours try to support him. If you do his form will return. If not then don’t think yourself any better than those Everton fans chasing Gordon out the club as there is less difference than you think. Sadly it seems it’s gone beyond the point of return. Next summer will tell us this. Edited Sunday at 15:37 by LFEE

Next summer will tell us this. Bit extreme. Are we blockading roads and telling him to get out the club whilst offering him out? Certain players do seem to be a lightning rod for negativity and moans and groans from the crowd. Murphy, Longstaff, Almiron. I can be guilty of it, for sure. Willock is another that fans get frustrated with and it’s understandable at times. But I’m not having that suddenly being positive about Longstaff will mean his performances and form will improve? I also don’t think he’s regressed as a player. I think he’s always been a limited player. Who was very good in a particular setup and following the plan to the letter. The fact we are trying to evolve as a team and we now have better players. It has become even more noticeable. It’s not a coincidence that he now seems to be 6th choice CM. He deserves our support when he’s on the pitch. Everyone at the club does currently. Which maybe wasn’t the case over the years! But I’m not sure what the issue is with talking about him on here when he’s been playing crap or suggesting he needs to be moved on?

greydos Posted Sunday at 16:11 Share Posted Sunday at 16:11 Great pass to Livramento for Wilson's goal yesterday. Perfect line and weight. The rest of the game he's a useful enough pest to the opposition, like sending a border collie scampering round the pitch. Just not much use when we have the ball. I'm willing to keep him as squad cannon fodder

We need a squad, last season showed us that. no one is silly enough to say we dont need a player to cover the debate is if Sean at 27/28 coming to the end of his contract gets a big extension and sticks around as backup or do we sell and reinvest in the squad, he's going to need replacing by youth setup or signing. I dont think he is good to have a sustained period in the side and the quality gulf between one of the two you mentioning coming out and him coming in is too big. as has been suggested if no one comes in for him I can see the club giving him a 2/3 year deal just to stop him walking away for nothing which right now for me would be a mistake. Groundhog63 Posted Sunday at 16:22 Share Posted Sunday at 16:22 Had a look at this thread at 8am this morning before we boulled out skiing. Started typing "good to see now Miggy's gone there's another whipping boy on the conveyor belt" but didn't bother. Even read some wanker suggest Longstaff doesn't even try man 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Honestly, have your opinions. Crack on. I've got mine and there's some absolute howlers in our ranks. Sean Longstaff is a decent enough player. Played a big part in finishing 4th. Played a big part in our, short lived, CL campaign. ISN'T Tonali and Bruno level. According to Eddie, on selection alone, isn't even Joelinton, Miley and Willock level so 6th choice. Tbf, he probably needs to go and get 1st team football elsewhere and then you lot can move onto the next poor sap.

Same as those saying he's been utter shite against poor sides on multiple occasions this season. We just don't need him in our squad anymore, we should sell him and chase either another purple or a player with potential to become a purple. I think this is it 50k a week to be 6th choice and minutes restricted, he is 28 this year coming to the end of his current contract and you would imagine even if player sales happen he will always be down the pecking order here due to what he can offer. I think it would be better for him to move on and get more game time and us to invest the money into progressing. I have no doubt he loves the club by all accounts nice lad goes to loads of the youth games and is really invested into the place but that doesnt mean he cant go on to have a great career elsewhere.
