Dont really remember people calling for him to be sold, just not used at LB.

Haven’t checked, but would a sale of Longstaff leave us short of homegrown players for the CL?

 

He’s a solid PL midfielder - he’ll attract interest - but it would be a problem if we’re left short in Europe.  He’s a better player than he’s often given credit for.

Depending on who/how many we buy, it’s probably the difference between being allowed to have someone like Kraft registered or not.

You’re right, let’s keep Longstaff for another year. Certainly would be great business if he contributed the same amount as this year and walked away on a free transfer next summer.

Yeah, that’s true.  No issue with the club selling anyone and it feels like we’ve outgrown the lad tbh.

My issue is we sell Longstaff, and then what? We sold Anderson last summer, Willock is injury prone, and Miley may not be ready yet. Are we going to buy a better 10m backup who is ready to start games right away, which Eddie is often hesitant to do, especially with younger players? 10m doesn't get you far in todays market, unless you are really creative. As bad as Sean Longstaff has been at times, getting a cheap replacement may not work out any better for this season with lots of games coming. That said if the club does sell him, I trust them to have a plan behind it. Or he just really wanted to go, which would be understandable.

It's an area we need to improve on, player trading. To get where we need to be for a consistent challenge our back up players need to be a level up from Sean. The Bromley game highlighted his limitations

In fairness to the current ownership they’ve never had many spare players worth anything to trade. When they have they’ve done well IMO with the fees.

To improve in that area we need to sell in that area first. Selling Longstaff to upgrade to a younger, better player is a must in my eyes.

 

If we don't and just go with what we've got next season, we'll be in a bit of trouble I think with the extra games (even without them). Bruno, Joelinton and Tonali are great, but the drop off after those 3 is huge. We need a 4th player to rotate to some degree as those 3 cannot and won't play ever game. Hopefully Miley can step up as well next season.

He no longer offers the output we need - there’s a reason why he started only 8 times - he is way behind our starting 3 - we need our bench players to make contributions throughout the season

Absolutely. He's totally flawed as a squad player because he takes a few 90 minutes to get up to speed and doesn't have the guile to impact a game off the bench. He'd be a brilliant signing for Leeds as he should start 38 games for them.
