Callum Wilson: offered 'incentive-based' contract extension (Ornstein)

Do people really believe Callum Wilson is going to be a Toon player in 25/26? Yes they are in discussions over a new deal but it is a token gesture. He'll go and get better money and opportunities elsewhere.

It could be mind games from his agent to get him a better deal elsewhere. I could see that.

Yes, I get it. But the manager doesn't view him as being a complete write off.

And so I'm trying to look at it from his point of view.

I imagine he is being kept for his character, he hasn’t scored a league goal in over a year has he ?

Yeah, that could be it too, but could only see that if Wilson has realised his race is run, and he's ready to pretty much pack it in as a player, which might be the case.

Do you think Callum Wilson's ego would sign on to be a high-character guy who plays in the Carabao Cup and a few minutes here and there? He is still talking about being in the '26 World Cup squad...

He knows he’s not getting in the England squad [emoji38]

Shite poem that.

There was a footballer named Cal,

NO thought he was Eddie's pal,

He asked him to stay,

Because he thought he would slay,

But he broke both legs in a fall.

Better?

Shows  how much progress is still required for NUFC to become a well run, competent and ultimately ruthless organisation constantly striving to become more successful. Also shows the importance of the hierarchy of the club being in place rather than letting the coach make these kinds of decisions. Under no circumstances can Callum Wilson meaningfully contribute to the team or squad going forward. Then again trust in Edddie. Actually bollocks to that.

I also don’t think Wilson will accept it either. This was on the table before the last game of the season and he looked offski.

Possible he hasn't had the offers he was hoping for mind.

Hey. You. The one handwringing about this. All of your worst fears will come true. We will re-sign Wilson to a multi-year deal. He will be expected to play a significant number of games but will be injured early and often. We will not sign another striker.

Matt Richie and Paul Dummett were kept around for similar reasons.

Part of this, I'm sure, is Howe wanting the squad to understand the worth of a good professional character.

Something like "If you have a good attitude and work hard and do what we ask, we won't just throw you on the scrap heap at the first opportunity".

If he stays, he will barely feature and he'll be on alot less money. It's really not a big deal.

Mind, I'd be surprised if one of the promoted sides or upper tier championship sides don't take a punt on him.

Even if someone like Leeds could eek 6/7 goals out of him from the bench, that might be the difference in survival.

I love Cal but the 20 appearances and 0 goals isn’t going to help him.   He really needed to score a few in those last few months of the season.  &nbsp

Same with DCL stinking it out.

Yeah, he only had 370 minutes in the league though. And quite a few of those were coming on when we were 2 or three goals up and not even trying to attack. Going essentially the equivalent of 4 or 5 games without a goal is hardly that worrying.

Plus another 103 mins in the cups with one goal. So he played basically just over 5 games, with one goal.

It's his availability that's the main concern for me. He's obviously not going to be quite the player he was after all the injuries, but personally I think people are overstating his decline.

I'd have no problem with him getting a deal heavily incentivised on him not falling apart, particularly if we have extra cover via a RW who can cover CF or if Howe decides it's now time to give people a proper taste of Big Willy.

Got to admit it's a mistake to just keep him around the place, he needs to be moved on. It's not the end of the world by any stretch and it's not going to cost a lot of money but the message it sends out isn't great imo. He's struggled to make any kind of impact in any of the games he's played  appeared and he's been rewarded with the offer, albeit on a lower wage, of a new contract. Love Howe but he does seem to have this blindspot when it comes to being ruthless about letting players go at the right time. I can understand the logic of filling the dressing-room with 'good lads' but not when they're appearing at the expense of our developing players AND producing zero on the pitch. Any contract he's offered shouldn't be based on what he's done but it should be based squarely on what he's offering right now and for the next 12 months and that, right now, is very very little

How does it show that?

If you're keeping a player purely because he's a good guy, nice to have around the place, then you'd just offer him a job in your staff surely? If we're offering him an extension to his role as a player, taking up a squad space, then to me the intent is clearly to try to put him on the pitch, which suggests we won't sign a striker this summer.

Osula doesn't give a flying fuck man. He's having a blast regardless.

Gets a free scarf and a share bag of Haribo Sours with every appearance on the bench.
