So what we saying for the first game against Croatia?

                       Pickford

Walker     Stones    Maguire     Shaw

                    Henderson

              Mount         Rice

Sancho                                Foden

                         Kane

Madness to start Henderson after he's been out so long imo. Lucky to be even in the squad.

Reckon I'd go:

                  Rice            JWP

Greenwood       Foden            Rashford

                           Kane

Probably be the only one like. Don't fancy Henderson or Phillips at CM. Think Greenwood's gonna be class and the most likely goalscorer after Kane; also he's better suited to the right unlike Sterling. Rashford to start cos he's a legend, not that the Razzler isn't. Foden pips Mount cos he's better.

Maybe Sancho instead of Greenwood, having just looked at his stats.

The options are simply peng.

Did...did you just use the term Peng on un-ironically?

This is why I dont rate Southgate. The 4 right backs is insane, but if you absolutely must have 4 for versatility, why do you not put the best performing and best defender out of the lot of them in there with Wan BIssaka? Talk about playing one of them right hand side of a 3, Reece James is not your man. Neither is Walker really. If you want two wing playing RBs, fine, but 4 is insane. I know he has played Walker right of a back 3 but WB is clearly the better defender. Trippier, TAA, Reece James and Walker just arent anywhere near different enough to justify all 4 of them. 3 and Wan Bissaka would still be insane but it'd make more sense at least.

No doubt he's been slow to get back after injury and form at the end hasnt been paticularly good, but he gives you a different option to Lingard, who will be behind Foden, Grealish, Rashford, Sako, Sancho & Sterling. Probably Greenwood. That's 7 players who are likely to play either side of the man up top. Lingard makes 8. Maddison can at least play a bit further behind and use his technique to create something from deeper. In that squad there's only really Mount and Ward Prowse to do that as it stands. If you think Rice, Henderson, Bellingham and Phillips are likely to be playing in front of the defence.

Got a feeling Scotland might squeak through. They’ll lose at Wembley but think they’re capable of beating Czech Republic and drawing with Croatia particularly with home advantage both times.

I've just seen far too many NT tournies where we take out of form or coming back from injury players expecting it to suddenly change and for them to produce fuck all. Even more so when the player isn't too tier, thry have even further to come back from.

Take the fittest and in form, forget the names and reputations and if you are neither a name or in form then you're watching it on the tele like everyone else.

That's fair about form. I suppose I just don't see the point in having far too many players for a certain position form or not, cos they wont all play. And why leave yourself potentially under represented in another position to take far to many form players for 1 or 2? Just doesnt really seem all that thoughtful imo. Southgate all over.

Might be a case say he wants 4 central mids, but all are in form and fit. No need to really cast his eyes over that. He's looking a bit further forward and he's got 2 squad positions to fill but 5 players who could do the job. 2 are coming back from injury, 1 is suspect quality and the other 2 out of form. You'd take them all in the provisional squad and cut the 3 which aren't showing enough. The 4 central mids chose themselves, but throughout the squad looked unbalanced.

Unless i;ve got this wrong and there isn't a cut coming. Usually there is but Covid may have changed that?

Also absolutely no need for Lingard to be going ahead of Maddison. Fair play he's done well at West Ham but there are 6/7 players in that provisional squad that all get in his position ahead of him.

Agreed! If he makes it on a handful of half decent performances, then surely Willock falls into that category. And no Bamford is fucking strange.

Henderson

TAA Stones Maguire Shaw

Rice Bellingham

Sancho Mount Foden

Kane

Trent could just as easily be any of the other right backs, but gets my vote because we lack set piece specialists without him.

What sort of player is Bellingham, then? Literally don't think I've seen him once besides him coming off the bench for England against San Marino.

Very box to box from what I've seen at Dortmund. Seems the perfect partner for a player like Rice. Have a feeling Southgate doesn't trust the defence enough in a back 4 to not play two defensive mids though unfortunately.

We’ll lose a right-back but will almost certainly go with three in the 26 in case Southgate wants to play wing-backs (as he likes Walker in a back three). When you look at the attacking options though, it seems crazy he’s gone into matches with seven defenders/DMs.

Also no idea how Bamford isn’t in there. Joint fourth top scorer in the league and more goals than any English player after Kane. Nothing against the other strikers there, but think he adds something a bit different also.
