Why would he leave them on the bench if they’re a star player?

C'mon,  the amount of time it took Tonali to force out Longstaff, if you're a top player and the manager is starting Longstaff over you, you'd be fuming. Howe has done that a few times.

True. Ignoring the fact that he started in the first game of the season when we signed him. Assume you mean this season though.

Kevin Keegan on Eddie Howe:

"Where you are so lucky here now you have a guy in charge of your football club who gets it. He really does get it. You have not had that for a long time. Forget Mike Ashley he's not worth talking about.

But it was 10 years where this club went absolutely nowhere, but this guy now (Eddie Howe), who you've got, if they support him, definitely Eddie Howe, don't give up on him...

I was with Eddie Howe at the theatre, and we discussed for 20 minutes all things Newcastle United. From that minute on, before that I was convinced, but I was convinced that this guy (Howe) will take you where you want to go. So support him."

Eddie is having to do his job with one hand tied behind his back due to PSR.  He's been unable to add a new first team player for two seasons now yet we are in a cup final, knocking on the door of CL football and were a Willock header away from being in the QF of the FA cup. We've only one truly elite player of note, our squad is knackered, some key players have yet to find their best form.  Yes it is disappointing when we don't perform and yes Eddie makes mistakes but all in all what more do we expect?

To Howes credit he really seems to have fully grasped how we need to move going forward with recruitment, in order to navigate PSR and give ourselves a better chance of competing.

I think we are going to be fine going forward. We just have to get through this season really. Champions League this season would be a massive help to get us there quicker by making even more significant moves this summer.

It's going to be a tense end to the season. Just hope he can figure out a way to get the team over the line.

That means a lot. Howe is not perfect, he will get things wrong. But Keegan is spot on in getting to the heart of it, and it's the same as Keegan's own time here. He didn't get everything right, but he got most of it. He was Mr Newcastle, and Howe is similar. He just gets what the city is all about.

Kevin always had the best interests of the supporters at heart so any endorsement from him carries a tremendous amount of weight with me.

Although that is very nice to read (the Keegan comments), Eddie's work and results here since he's been here should already be enough to show you he's the one for us and we should always support him. He's worked some miracles, gotten the best out of players who would otherwise be gone in a different financial climate and has given us some of our best ever memories during his time here.

Eddie's results are right up there with Keegans and Robsons....his problem is that the league is more advanced and skewed to the slimy 6. Put EH in charge in 96 and we take 2 titles home

There are 4 crazy seasons in there with 30 point gaps, take them and the BCD season out and you're looking at about 18 points average (its 21 with them included). I reckon by the time we get to May the gap will be nearer that than the 6 it currently is.

City will go on a run and pick up 7 or 8 wins from the remaining 11, Forest have peaked and will pretty much spread the games across W/L/D, Bournemouth will do slightly better with maybe 5 wins, fuck knows with us, we could win 8 or lose 8 of the remaining games, Brighton and Fulham will do the same as Forest. Villa have a game less and are as erratic as we are

I'm not sure it makes much sense to dismiss the 30+ gaps  as crazy seasons and remove them from the calculation of the average when they make up 4 of the last 8 seasons.

"We're in a good place," Eales, the club's CEO, told reporters. "We're pleased with the business we did in January in terms of our transfer outgoings.

"Being quite open, that's something in the past that's been challenging for us in terms of making those player transfers out. That was good for us in terms of that window.

"Paul and his team have had a period of time now working with Eddie as well because, ultimately, it's about getting the players that Eddie wants in his position. There's real alignment in that respect so we're excited about the summer ahead."

This is absolutely brilliant to hear tbh.

More and more I am really now just looking forward to the summer more than anything.

Can't wait to see improvements made to the team.

He has a chronic condition that can’t be cured. It generally carries good life expectancy and quality of life for a number of years. I think he’s going to be leaving but they’re just not rushing it

On a side note, is Eales on the road to recovery and staying?  Following his health announcement, I barely heard a word about his replacement search.

The Athletic said the ownership group are still in the middle of the process to replace him. Eales will be working until they do.

times like this I'm glad we have a manager who's calm and steady, never gets too carried away after winning or too down after a defeat

as right now the outlook for the final is pretty bleak, odds stacked against us and probably original game plan up in smoke this week

keeping squad morale high and instilling a belief they can win is so important right now

must be incredibly difficult though, as a fan I almost just want the season to end, which is ridiculous considering we're in a final and anything could still happen

By then he'll just retire and get his pension.

Getting rid of purple patch Almiron, once-high level performer Wilson, Trippier a shadow of the influence he was, Longstaff useless, Willock nowhere near what he was, Pope being two levels below, Schar declining and Botman being out injured, with the only real big changes being Tino and Tonali shows how much we're punching above our weight and what a huge difference there is in the 2022/23 side to now.

Isak and Murphy performing at a high level

Burn being an ever present and very solid

Hall being excellent for the most part

Gordon being decent

Barnes getting a few goals in narrow wins at the start of the season

has really helped us to what is almost a false position. Howe really does need to take a lot of the credit for that.

The team really does need major surgery in the summer.

They now have a chance to immortalise themselves before the gang is broken up.
