I assume we’re trying to buy the players he wants, but we’re finding they’re unattainable for us, which was quite predictable given we’re going after other premier league clubs best players. If it’s a case of us going after the wrong players then surely he’s also responsible.

This is exactly the issue - who's picking the targets? Who's negotiating the deals? Is Mitchell's list the same as Howe's? Who's speaking to agents? They've had fucking months to prepare for this summer and nothing has happened at all.

Eddie Howe is a brilliant football manager and he's more than done his bit over the last 10 months, expecting him to be on the phone tying up deals when he's on his holidays is ridiculous, there has to be a system in place where other people step up and execute basic transfer/scouting shit? Putting all of this on Howe isn't fair imo, he has to take a step back and ask others to step in and help out a bit. Surely?

History and common sense tells us that Eddie signs plenty of players from abroad, without PL experience.

Apart from Scalvini link it’s been heavily PL based links, unless you know otherwise this summer ? Last summer we chased a PL based CB all summer without any apparent plan b and the new sporting director thinking our scouting wasn’t fit for purpose ?

I doubt Howe is the one on the phone, but if we look at the players we MIGHT have missed out on this summer.

Delap

Huijsen

Mbeumo

Pedro

Guehi

We didn’t really stand much chance with any of them because we’re outgunned by our competition. Whatever fee or wages we could offer, they can offer more.

According the Athletic Howe, Howe and Nickson are picking targets. Solis and Reuben are helping with negotiations.

Seems like we've been knocked back by Huijsen, Delap and Pedro now, who I assume were unanimously approved by the three selecting the targets.

The issue for me appears to be the following:

1)  Other clubs can spend what they want

2) We are trying to do things by the book without creative accounting

3) London

4) Recently successful clubs

None of which have owt to do with Howe.

I posted a few days back about two other players we’ve definitely been interested in and enquiring about, but I don’t know how far we have taken them.

That Monaco winger who’s name I have an inability to retain, and the young lad Prestianni from Benfica.

If you only take last summer into account, sure I could see why you think Eddie only wants PL experience, but other than that he’s been more than willing to shop abroad.

We are also choosing super obvious targets that will have PL competition at competitive prices.

Which is what I said earlier… we’ll be going after the “obvious” and highly competitive targets first, partly because they might be the top of the list, and partly because if we don’t, they’ll definitely be gone.

That may be a factor, but that also represents a higher chance of success buying proven players in the league. The issue isn't that we are after these players in our position, the issue is that we cannot compete with other clubs that we should be able to compete with.

Akliouche, I hope. He's class, although would be more expensive than Elanga probably. That being said we could have more to spend now we don't need to put £60m towards Joao Pedro.

Aye, that’s the one.

Given everything else we've seen from all participants concerned across time, surely there's a solid chance Howe is impeccable here and we've got others who are clowning about.

There was no sign of him sulking over signing unproven foreign defenders and strikers like Botman and Isak when supposedly his influence was at its zenith. Something changed between Tonali arriving and Amanda going.

“We pride ourselves on identifying our targets quickly and then we have to act quickly and efficiently as a football club.”

That’s from after the Chelsea game. Hopefully that’s true since we need a load of new targets.

Pretty sure the shortlist will have gone beyond three players.

We’ve been after people like Trafford, Elanga and Pedro for ages so I wouldn’t automatically assume there’s a long list. The Guehi thing last summer also suggests that.

I think we need to blame Mitchell here, draw a line under it and see what this week brings.

I think as you elevate to higher heights the pool of players that improve you naturally reduces.

I also think because of FFP, unless you have a very vast, skilled & experienced  scouting network that are capable to find diamonds in the mud - you then have a "filter" that suggests PL proven players and all of a sudden the pool becomes very short based on what is affordable and what other clubs are being allowed to do financially.

That all being said, I'd find it hard to believe Howe wouldn't take a calculated punt on someone unproven if it comes to it, as he has clearly proven he is capable of getting the very best out of players.

What is interesting is Mitchell's criticism of the policy - which may be right from financial standing - but from a footballing one absolutely isn't. Howe doesn't control the finances...

That’s the theory. But the best transfers in the PL are almost always for players bought from abroad.  Even the most expensive PL to PL transfers are sketchy.

Later in the Window is best for foreign signings imo. Less options to sell for the selling club.

Bit too soon to say whether he's being let down, far better to make that judgement when the window closes

It's not even July yet, plenty of time left

Exactly. Another whole week before training starts, and even then it won’t be mid July until everyone is back. Past that I’ll be concerned if we haven’t brought more than Trafford in.
