Nah, it's perfectly valid to use the Isak situation as an excuse. Firstly, we had to play the first three games without a capable centre forward. Secondly because one of the two strikers he signed picked up an injury and the other completely alters our patterns of play up top. It'll take a bit of time to build those attacking relationships and might require a bit of patience in the meantime.

The midfield and wingers need to start chipping in, but we haven't played a flat midfield three for a while now. Yesterday they just looked off it, even Sandro who is outstanding, looked gassed.

We just look like a side who are very much in transition. Despite criticism of inflexibility, Howe has also been pelters for playing three at the back, which looked solid but just as impotent as 4-3-3. Is it not just that we have a completely new attacking line up that looks rather disjointed due to their relationship being five games old?

But even without a striker, it was a known front three and personal, with usual midfield to work on attacking plays every day on training ground and we often were still clueless with the ball in attack. Our best chances coming from direct counters.

It was frustrating that the few chances we created, a natural finisher would’ve took them (like the quarter chance we gave Wolt yesterday), but using the Isak situation allows a massive pass on clear things that have been off in our attack back end of last season with Isak, and start of this.

If it continues into December, it won’t be a shock, but hopefully Howe can fine tune a couple of elements and it suddenly clicks. Because that’s football, fine margins and tweaks.

It’ll be interesting to see what the vibe is like if we end up losing the derby. Not until December though so you’d hope the form has improved by then.

What period of time are you referring to?

Even if we have a shit season I won’t be wanting a new manager. Howe has the right character and the ability to adapt and turn things around. The only thing I want is for us to value technical ability more and become more comfortable in possession, I’ve wanted that for a couple of seasons and I don’t think it’s happening. When we control games it always seems to be through superior athleticism.

Scuffed shots by AG, over the bar or take right footed open body shots by Barnes, and Mr transition counter who can’t cross or shoot Elanga is nothing on our coaching staff. It’s on them.

I mean it is a little bit - they don’t sign or pick themselves

This is our functional squad, rated not by how good they are but how they are performing in my view relative to their ability and circumstances. A zero means as expected

1. Pope +1

2. Trippier 0

3. Hall +1

4. Botman +3

5. Schar 0

6. Lascelles n/a

7. Joelinton -3

8. Tonali 0

9. Wissa n/a

10. Gordon -2

11. Barnes -2

12. Thiaw +4

17. Krafth n/a

18. Osula +1

20. Elanga -3

21. Livramento +2

23. Murphy +5

27. Woltemade +4

28. Willock -5

32. Ramsdale n/a

33. Burn +2

39. Bruno -1

41. Ramsey n/a

67. Miley +1

So if 24 players, 6 are underperforming and 10 are overperforming

at this stage of the season it is an issue for those six players to fix with help of management. If they don’t get better or replaced from the starting eleven or other players get worse then it becomes an issue with the coaching.

Where are those coming from?  Hall hasn’t played yet he’s over performing?  Botman is performing well above his level?

You won’t get that under Howe tbf - similar players to fit the system will be bought next summer too.

Botman is performing at his level, he’s an elite CB.

This is fairly meaningless way to assess players like, it would suggest the manager doesn’t have to do anything to get top players to perform well

If I've got one criticism of Howe, it's that he doesn't trust in youth enough. He'll go with experience even when players like Joelinton or Bruno need a rest rather than start Miley, or Anderson when he was here. I feel Rafa was better in that regard, he would rotate players ruthlessly, and many of us used to get quite pissed about it.

Do the signing of Woltemade and Ramsey not hint of a change to that system ?

He’s had 2 decent young players available to him in his entire NUFC career.

That would be disappointing if it turns out to be true, but he’s shown he can develop over time. At Newcastle he’s not been the same manager he was at Bournemouth. He’s not one of these managers that decides what his style is and dies with it.

Yeah and he should use them when we need to rotate.

Tbf it seemed like he was just about to really start using Anderson when he got injured.

Who else should we be using ? Shahar ? Alex Murphy ?

We’ve played the same style since he arrived tbf - it’s why we still struggle to break down any side likely to finish between 7-14th.  I don’t have an issue with it tbf - we’ve been successful with it - but the last creative technical footballer we bought was Bruno four years ago.

I don’t mean any of this as a criticism of Howe btw - Guardiola plays the same way he did a decade and a half ago.  I like the way we tend to play under Howe.

We could really use a decent back up LB. If Murphy's not good enough, then we need to get a young hopeful who is.

I think it's fair to say in terms of results we've not had the strongest start to the season and for whatever reason it hasn't quite clicked yet.

But for me that's all it is - it hasn't quite clicked yet.

It's been a season of fine margins for us. Narrow losses (and very late goals) to Arsenal and Liverpool. Plenty of chances where if we'd have just put them away games would have gone differently, etc.

We've played well enough in parts, and looked less impressive in others. This is the same for every team in the league. If we were going out and routinely getting beaten by 2 to 3 goals I'd be worried but that's not happening.

I'm sure it'll turn around.

Also in terms of Howe's job I consider him to be one of the very best in the league. He is as close to being Newcastle United as one man can be at this point for me.

As long as you're happy you have the right man you stick with him through the good times and the bad.
