Success is determined by trophies, not a decent finish So, to be clear, it is deemed successful to win the b league - and thus finish 21st in the pyramid - but deemed a failure to finish 2nd in the PL (Keegan) and 3rd in the PL (Robson). And if Rafa had kept us up, but then gone onto to achieve survival a few times, he would be deemed a failure for not having won a trophy? Is dinner only successful if you eat all of it? Souness stole something amazing from the fanbase and added to what was an implsion waiting to happen and to manage that was impressive. Definitely wasnt helped by the fact we were flat broke. Fair enough if we won trophies every year like, but we don’t. The guy who wants Howe sacked getting annoyed because the late Glenn Roeder was put in the hall of fame at the same time as Howe starts to give off a bit of a vibe. I think youve summed it up. if you achieve a trophy or one of the best things available i.e promotion, you were successful. Keegan had a successful season when we were promoted so yes he was a success. if we just look at his seasons where we failed to win the league then no he wasnt successful, he failed I don't see whats difficult here? if you win, you are, if you lose, you arent

Bobby is one of my heroes, but leaving something better than when it started isnt success, its progression I can accept if somebody has been successful in Howe's case whilst also saying what i always say, his on the field successes as a coach are incredible, his off the field actions as a manager arent. This has never ever changed and I always make this definition

Benitez you deem as a success here because he won the Championship, but he had to relegated us to do so. But if he did his primary objective and kept us up, he'd have been a failure? Guest
I think had Rafa kept us up he would have done well given a rotten set of circumstances but we knew when he came in the chances of us staying up were slim at best. Us staying up would have been a brilliant job and he would have achieved his objective but staying in a league isn't success, its the basics that Steve McLaren massively let us down on. if a plane is going down to a human error and somebody else jumps int he seat its not their fault if they cant right the problem. rafa was a desperate throw of the dice but the players were there who were more than capable of staying up The fact he then stayed and managed what was a rotten core of a club & succcessfully took it up i think it is great and was him beign successful as he achieved the best goal he could that year. Who was more successful last year, Daniel Farke who won the Championship or Arteta who won nothing but got a champions league final? Success is defined by winning, not how well you do in a season
