I'm not arguing Howe hasn't been backed (and I'm pretty sure the comment about that was referring to this month). He's gotten every penny available, which is the best thing you can say about PIF. I am very tired of some putting Emery on a pedestal when it's basically arguing which identical twin is more handsome. They've both done excellent jobs. Whitley mag
Fabregas, Alonso, Simeone, Tuchel just some of the names who could be considered if Eddie left. Attracting top European players through a big name might be the hack we need to break the elite. The above is based on PIF wanting to be number 1 and backing that up though. If we continue to just hear bluster and no action, then Eddie is probably the best man for the job to keep us around the top 8 every season. It might seem far fetched to think he’ll not be here next season, but I’m not sure he’ll survive a lower half finish and there’s some home games coming up, where bad defeats will leave the natives very restless. Put simply I don’t think this season can be written off as transitional as some on here would like it to be, he needs a strong finish and the players he signed need to start producing results. Is there really a point of using stats from 2 years ago when we spent £250m this summer on transfer fees? Think a few of our best players have also gotten a bumb in their contract since them. And I’m not saying he isn’t on a par with Emery - but I can’t abide the ‘he hasn’t been backed’ narrative, as if he’s been ‘Ashleyed’. The above numbers are from Swiss Ramble two years ago - the 25/26 numbers will have Howe comfortably ahead. I’ve not spent time on this thread doing the Emery comparisons - but if we’re just making up non-existent defences, then we’re surrendering critical faculties. The issue for me isn’t that we can’t compete with Man City - it’s that we’ve spent heavily and we’re currently sat in the bottom half underneath Sunderland. Howe has the squad he wanted to assemble (as an aside, I also don’t have much time for the ‘he didn’t get his first choices’ patter - as if every manager signs who they want). This is his team, his squad - he’s more than capable of getting a tune out of it. No-one should be talking about firing him for me - but he absolutely should be feeling some pressure to get his expensively assembled side to perform. TheBrownBottle
Alonso might, last I heard he’s out of work. It’s not like we haven’t persuaded a manager whose last managerial job was Real Madrid to join before. I wouldn’t hire Alonso over Howe, though. Decky
If we sacked Howe at the end of the season it would probably take them until August to appoint someone, while not doing any business in the transfer window in that time either.

If we sacked Howe today it would likely take that long. The only ‘positive’ is we’d get to see the likes of Caulkin and Hope wanking on about ‘the process’. Onana, Maatsen, Malen, Guessand, Abraham, and all the loans. The volume of their business is dizzying honestly. And that's where I'd start with any comparison of the two clubs -- since the 2023/24 summer window closed we've had a revolving cast of people in charge of both the club and its transfer business. We have not been run very well.

HaydnNUFC
If Howe was to go I'd take a punt on Fabregas. Though it's an enormous gamble and moot anyway. Howe rightfully has the rest of the season barring a total disaster where we tumble into the bottom 6 and he has another summer window. If that and the start of next season doesn't go right then I can understand, plus probably would want, a change. Simeone, whilst a fucking awesome appointment it would be, is never happening imo. Would be incredible to see it but can't. Can't see Alonso being available at the time where Howe probably would be moved on. If it happened before Slot got the bullet then he may fancy it but again, it's all moot. Edited February 2 by HaydnNUFC

Southgate, Iraola or Pochettino might. After that you're looking at the likes of Thomas Frank, Marco Silva, the bloke from Sunderland -- that sort of level. Or try to tempt Mourinho back for (another) last hurrah. There's not one of them that I'd bet on to do a better job than Eddie. Sacking him would be absolutely nuts.
