The club will be paying for the stadium.  The Saudi’s won’t gift it to the club. I don’t get this line of argument.

Unless they drastically change how they run the club, or income drastically increases, either directly or indirectly (with share issues to inject money to cover the costs) they will be gifting the club any new stadium.

I am hoping its more speculate to accumulate model like if I built an extension on my house enjoy it when I have it but longer term its increased the value of my home.

The report ages ago indicated it would be partly funded and part debt I assume that's to leverage their interests and risk but also longer term if the club were to be sold we would be worth more as a club with a new stadium (preferably owning the land its on) than as we are now so it wouldn't be a gift it would be a longer term look on making the club more valuable at exit.

As usual I don't really know what I think about Eddie (nobody's gonna listen to *my* podcast 🙂). Certainly nothing original. But if it is actually true that he's staying then I feel OK about that and there certainly seems a decent chance that he can get us back on track. There have been a bunch of negatives about this season that seem reversible or improvable. And others that are maybe more long-term baked in and concerning. Quite hard to figure out which is which.

One thing I find myself doing is thinking that a replacement manager would do none of the things that Eddie gets wrong, and also no new wrong things of his own! Whereas of course every manager has blind spots, weaknesses, foibles. And I guess one thing that we do know about Eddie is that the weaknesses he does have, if he can be clear eyed about seeing and accepting them (which is hard for any of us), he will work to improve.

He does seem to have leant too heavily on the prem for recruitment recently, which has been particularly bad as we can't actually get any of our top prem targets. But maybe Ross Wilson can sort that.

He does seem to have been tactically inflexible at times and wasn't as brilliant as me in seeing great (and pre 60th minute!) opportunities for game-changing substitutions. But he has also delivered some tactical masterclasses over the years.

And it does seem that there's been something a bit off in the camp this season, post rat, all the wolt+ wissa weirdness, mentality midgets. But that in particular seems likely to be temporary.

Some and maybe even most owners would have sacked Howe this season. For whatever combination of reasons ours seem not to be going to. That doesn't seem an obviously wrong decision (and we have had managers where every day we didn't sack them seemed an obvious mistake).

So I guess I'm at: fair enough?

A scintillating read as ever from me! 😂

Also, and while we're here - I want to stay at SJP even if it handicaps us for PSR relative to a new stadium. I just kindof realised that this season for some reason. It's fucking *SJP*, lads. Irreplaceable.

Thanks. I don't know why we are even arguing about this in the Howe thread.

@The College Dropout if you want to argue your case maybe take it up in the PIF thread.

No idea. But City Group announced the training campus within 3 years of buying the club. Construction contract signed in 4.

FSG announced expansion to Anfield within 2 years of purchase.

Once it got to 4 years, I think it's reasonable to start asking questions. Otherwise... how long before you start asking questions? 5 year in November - no concrete plans... is it time to start asking questions by then if nothing has been announced? 6 years? 7??

Maybe it was easier as it was in an out of town area that was pretty much disused/dilapidated. Next to a new stadium built for the Commonwealth Games.

I think Howe has the intelligence to change but I don’t know if he necessarily has the will. He’s been pretty clear throughout he only has one plan and the players just need to execute it better.

If you look at it from his perspective even if he doesn’t change and gets sacked he still gets a big pay out and likely gets another PL job within a year. Rinse and repeat.

He has one approach for this season, I don’t think he means he never intends to think about it again.

If you think he’s planning to cruise to the sack and rinse repeat without a care in the world, you must be talking about a different person.

We should have been 3 or 4 up in the first half v Brighton.

Does he really only have one approach? Has there been no tactical and system variation over this season? I am just curious that this seems to have become an accepted fact. I wonder whether those who watch home and away and have more knowledge than me about such things really don’t see any differences?

Not me, I see this as our best chance in a generation for a rocket powered super stadium

I do think that once we move to a new a stadium I will lose a part of my connection to the club in some way.

Just from that nostalgic, historical part. I don't live locally so when ever I do get to come up to the game I still get that child like butterflies when I step into the ground. All the memories that have been built up.

I fear once we move it will be one step further into being a more soulless club like so many others are now. Especially as new generations of fans start to replace the current who will continue to be priced out and more tourist half-scarf wearers become the norm instead.

I know it's necessary for financial growth, but I think a part of me will be lost when we finally move and it won't feel the same anymore.

We go 5 at the back if he thinks we’re going to get humped.

I do think we’ve been generally set up well to win games this season.

Biggest problems have been no striker to kill games off, our keepers throwing it in their own net constantly, Thiaw’s studs etc. The cumulative effect of all that has made the players fragile mentally.

If we’re talking about dire football, please watch the rest of the premier league. It is all awful.

The last paragraph is a great point. For styles of play and exciting, attacking football, this must down as the worst season in PL history.

That Arsenal, who are a particular hard watch, are likely to be crowned as the Champions about sums it up.

The only part recognisable from my first visit is the East stand. It’s definitely replaceable and it should be replaced. I’d like to build around the same pitch but that’s not possible. The current stands don’t mean anything more to me than the old wooden West Stand. Time moves on.

Same, but for me it's not the stands so much as the location. The exact situation.

And I might change my mind, maybe - but I so hate that psr etc is making clubs jettison all the things that make them distinctive and special. And for me that includes SJP being right where it is.

I may be an extremist on this tho. Like, if I was an arsenal fan then I wouldn't think arsenal should have left highbury, even if it meant less on field success. At least, I think that's what I'd think.

I do like rocket power🚀

But I don't like the new "super stadiums". At least, none of the ones I've been to (spurs, arsenal, wembley, maybe that's it). Soulless *as fuck* and being sold to all the time. Really like a big mall with a match happening in it. No thanks.

That’s why Leazes Park, a goal kick in a prevailing wind away from SJP, still works.

For me it would still essentially be SJP and our spiritual home.

On the Leazes plans that were shared a little while ago looks like we would be overlapping the area of the old and new stadium.

I assume this wouldn’t be done over a summer so do we have an entire corner of the stadium out of commission for a season or so or would we have to play our games elsewhere?

Found this (from last season—or a decade ago using the Fan-feelings-barometer), that makes a pretty strong case for his flexibility/adaptability as a manager. Concluding, that because of this, he is categorically and undeniably an elite manager. Make of that what you will.
