The 7th season was actually a good season in terms of the football played, we played great football when we had the players, it was just that period decimated by injuries we fell off a cliff. That was genuinely defensible and we were unlucky not to get some form of Europe for finishing 7th which would have been deserved.

This season has been terrible from day one. Absolutely no redeeming qualities at all, even the CL run didn’t have anything remotely close to the PSG 4-1 of the 7th season.

The league cup semi’s I don’t think we were that bothered by having deep runs previously especially as league form was so dire.

It’s also the fact that we had it in our own hands to salvage the season because everyone else was so poor too, but we could not respond at all. The league high points dropped from winning positions also would suggest we should be nearer 6th but I can’t remember too many games we were robbed or desperately unlucky. In fact the only one I can recall is Liverpool at home in September.

There was a comment about being destined for relegation but Howe saved us - sorry that’s garbage, the club spent a large amount of money on Trippier, Wood, Burn, Guimares to get out of trouble. We were never going down regardless of manager. However to be clear that doesn’t diminish what Howe did achieve in getting UCL twice and a league cup. We’ll all be forever grateful but the last year has been dreadful.

Sorry, but there's having a different opinion to others and then there's just talking unmitigated shite.  When Howe came in we were 100% destined to go down, no question.  He turned it around along with some pivotal signings and deserves a massive amount of credit for that no matter what you think of our current situation.

Chelsea at home with the blatant penalty we should've got.

That should've been a win.

It's alright saying well if he doesn't turn it around the Howe outers will have their wish by Xmas etc... it's not that simple, that's another transfer window potentially wasted on Howe players for a Howe system (whatever that is these days) with another half a season written off because of sentiment, because that's mostly what it is at this point.

Last summer's failure has already set us back horribly IMO, another one like that could take years to recover from, and the pool of talented managers won't go anywhere near it, or at least will be reluctant to do so.

A lot of the better managers will be in jobs by then aswell.

Iraola sitting there with no current next job on an 18 game unbeaten run at a club with far less resources than our own after having half his squad taken off him.

That's absolutely where we should be looking.

Go back and check the results. He didn’t turn anything around until the signings came in.

Could that not just be the team getting used to his setup early doors as they were a shambles under Bruce?

Sure. Or could it be the signings.

FWIW, I’ve hardly been singing Howe’s praises this year. But even though the results took a while to turn AND the signings played a big part. You could already see we were a much better side and actually had some sort of tactical plan when Howe replaced Bruce.

Seems a bit ridiculous to pin it all on the signings and nowt else.

Bit off both for sure we needed to add quality quickly as Wilson and maxi weren't exactly fit a lot to save us that season.

There is clearly a fuck tonne of issues behind the scenes imho. If Howe stays, he needs to clear out the non-committed, the non-believers and the non-capables. Big job. That’s probably about 10 players. He’s then got to sell the dream to their replacements and bond them all together in a new look team ready to attack the season.

That's something else to ponder. If there is a big turnover of players, how likely is it that Eddie will be able to gel them into his preferred formations or methods to get us off to a good start to the season? Given he's had all season with Woltemade and Wissa and we are still none the wiser come the end of the campaign?

He would need players who fit exactly into his system, ready to go from day one (PL ready! ) and then if it goes tits up, the next manager would have to use the same players for what might be a totally different system.

The season we finished 7th was disappointing too, right? So there’s previous. Particularly in over-playing trusted players and a refusal to adapt. In game management has been a theme throughout. There’s been a lot of good, and the trophy was unreal, but we are saying we can overlook 14 months of poor football, poor decisions, poor squad balance, etc. I think on balance it’s hard to argue how he turns it around. That he doesn’t have European matches is, for me, an indictment of failure rather than something to look forward to as many have framed it!!

The beige comment is my opinion. These last few months he has been incredibly uninspiring to listen to. Again for me I just can’t quite see what others get so defensive about. He’s achieved less than Ranieri, Glasner, Martinez did with Leicester, Palace and Wigan on a vastly larger budget.

So Howe didn't save us from relegation? Heard it all now.

You think Tripps and Bruno would have signed for Bruce?

You think 38 points in 19 games - Champions League qualification form - from the day Trippier arrived (and we were five points adrift of safety) would have happened without Howe?

Absolute horseshit.

Very difficult to take such post seriously tbh

Totally see this point of view. There is always the issue of ‘what if he gets it wrong?’.

The alternative being ‘what if he gets it right? Again’.

And therein lies the rub.

Ultimately it’s all about the clubs hierarchy assessing that risk making a judgement on it.

That's before we even consider, what if we replace him and the new guy doesn’t work.

There are no certainties, either way. It’s all a judgement call. I presume they’re choosing to stick with what they know because there is some actual evidence of proven past performance. Conversely, if they announced today he was finished, I’d say they’d crunched the numbers, made their judgement and you’d have to back them in trying someone else new.

It sounds like he’s considering Palace.

I think we'd have stayed up, not as emphatically as we did under Howe though.

Wonder what Hopkinsons thoughts are. Since giving that interview where he said he’s confident we will go on a run and finish the season strongly, we have taken 7 points from 7 games.
