No, I wanted him gone, but accept he stays and got to get on with it. No point harping back. The time was final game of the season, it's gone now, so we've got to move forward with him. People who have said he stays at all costs need to accept this has got to be the last chance, even then, a sacking before xmas would mean 2 derailed seasons, and they'll need to accept how far backwards we've gone.

I think while this season was a backwards step, its amazing how quickly things can turn for the positive. As you say, that might require a new manager but in football, its never terminal.

I always remember Roeder coming in for Souness and the cloud being lifted. We played unreal football and finished 7th. Sadly Roeder was never the long term fix but the point still stands about forward momentum.

I think we are in agreement then. He deserves this chance.

Lets say he gets us CL this season, does that reset your confidence, or will you want him sacked if the following year we fall short? Thats not a loaded question by the way, genuinely interested.

I actually disagree with the 12th and FA cup sentiment. In many ways, that would be the perfect junction to part ways. Obviously would be buzzing for the cup.

If he gets us CL next season I'll be very happy but then if it's followed by another really poor season like this one then none of the questions or concerns will have been answered or addressed. He needs to prove he can juggle the demands of a European campaign alongside domestic duties which is something he's struggled with so far in terms of his squad management. I've already mentioned the farcical team selection v Qarabag at home as an obvious example.

As I've said, the 2 names I've been championing for a while are both in new jobs now and the 3rd one looks like he's about to so I genuinely don't have any idea who could now come in and do a better job so I'll be backing him from August but with doubts in the back of my mind.

And I don't have a problem with people believing he deserves another season. Part of me does, just a bigger part of me thinks the time should have ended after the final whistle against Fulham. Club don't agree with me. Again, something I have to accept.

If Amanda was still here, i'd believe more. tbf, the 'buzz' would probably still be here. This is what she brought, it's priceless.

I agree on Staveley. A great stateswoman. A throwback.

I don't think it's unfair to say Howe deserves a second bite at the bullet after last summer and a plethora of mitigating circumstances that have been repeated ad nauseum, I also don't think that its unfair to say that he should be sacked if the slide continues and we have another poor season. I am confident that with Wilson taking the summer on head first as he has and fresh faces in a stale squad, that Howe will have a much better season concentrating on what he does best, the players and the tactics, without Europe also there is no excuse not to be tearing up trees.

It's mad the conversation people can on this have without pushing people to either sides extreme wings to prove and point score.

I think the issue on this, certainly for me, is that some people were and have been gunning for Howe since very early on (Not aimed at you because I honestly dont remember who said what).

Ive said before that when we finished 4th their were people questioning him mid season, right before we shot up the league.

The next year we finished 7th, we had some really ropey performances but with plenty of mitigation (CL, injuries, Tonali ban), people were asking for him to be sacked then.

Even in our cup winning season, there was a point where we were pretty poor (remember west ham away 1-0), we looked destined to be beatsn in the final and get nowhere near CL, there were the same voices.

I suppose what im saying is that its the boy who cried wolf (again not you), there were people saying he should be sacked when there's no good reason to sack him, therefore now its hard to take seriously the same conversations.

Personally if someone says they have backed him all the way but right now they are starting to really doubt if hes the way forward, I think that's a perfectly fair stance. However if someone has been gunning for him from day one, personally I feel their opinion ain't worth shit.

The issue is that I cant remember who said what.[emoji38]

So weve had a poor season, so he should be sacked?

Its weird how you dismiss winning a cup, like its not a thing we should be sentimental attached to. Its also ridiculous to suggest that's Howes only achievement.

Eddie Howe has given me more highs as a Newcastle fan than any other manager in my lifetime. I went to my first game in 94.

CL footy, big wins, big moments, big scalps, great footballers, a side and group of players to be proud of.

Elanga isnt a good footballer. Im not really interested in his stats from the previous year, in the same way that im not interested in Murphys stats from that year. Sometimes the eye test is better. Poor recruitment is the crime.

Wissa, the injury has killed him.

Tbf, winning a cup has lost some of it's lustre with half the clubs in the EPL winning one in the last few years. Glasner has won two in half the time Eddie has been here.

It was a massive event for us obviously, after 70 years silverware felt like a miracle. But you can't live on that forever, our bread and butter has to be performing well in the EPL consistently, and challenging for UCL qualification every season.

What a monumentally depressing and negative take.

Soz, but I have to admit it took some of the shine off when Spurs fought relegation all season, then won the UEFA cup with Ange qualifying for the CL at the same time. Silverware is what it's all about, but when half the league is winning cups then obviously it makes it a bit less special.

I'm about the same. The realistic candidates who'd be a step up are gone, so no point even thinking about it now. I do worry its more of the same and we're another £100-150m deep into the same tactical blackhole and another managfer has an even bigger job on to turn it around. Keeping him to only sack him by 2027 is my worst scenario in this. I don't believe he deserves it by default because of a cup win. This is very small time, neither because he's a good guy. Its a results business and you're only as good as your last game, and when you've had a season of utter shite, its hard to see where and how it turns around.

One thing is for absolute certain, he can't be allowed to recruit, it has to be the club structure and not on him.

He wasn’t really allowed to recruit before, he was more required to recruit because we didn’t have a structure to do it.

Forever? How about living on it for a season or two

It's not just about that though. There's a lot of teams who've finished above them for 2 years in a row that they'd need to overhaul.

While spurs have had poor management, lots of injuries, maybe poor signings and deep European runs.  While most of them haven’t had any Europe.

Pretty much every established PL side is 1 good transfer window away and a good manager from finishing in the top 8. Let alone Spurs.

OK, but you’re still talking of getting sick of the best day in our supporting lives when it happened very recently.

But that's not what I said. I said it had lost some of it's shine, and even then only because it was followed by a disastrous season and other unheralded clubs are winning trophies left, right and centre.

I'm probably around 70/30 in favour of wanting him gone but can still see the argument for giving him next season. It just boils down to whether or not people have the confidence that he's able to turn it around or not. Also the Cup win has an emotional sway on people. Basically I'm 70/30 that I think the decline has set in and he won't be able to turn it around but there's still that part of me who thinks he might which is why I still understand why people want him to stay.

Another big factor is that my first 2 choices to replace him would have been Alonso and Iraola but they are now both in new jobs. After those 2 my next choice would have been Glasner and it looks like he's off to Milan so I'm scratching my head now as to who his replacement would be.

Unfortunately, Emery can't come either, and I don't see a better alternative right now, maybe JM.

I missed why young players don't get more opportunities, we would have achieved this performance even then, I don't understand Cordero's loan either, we really have to figure something out because it will be difficult for us. We can't confirm stars, due to salary demands etc., buying mediocre players at high prices is not an option again. Searching for young talents is also not working, or if they do, they prefer to choose a place where they get more playing time.

What a cheery addition you've been so far.

Awful whinging, every single post.

I'm quite excited with the links we're getting to young and talented players. It points to a pivot in recruitment strategy.

And I do think Howe can work with what he has in the squad to get the best out of them. Actually, when he came in he had a rotten unfit squad with no real tactics. But then, a few key acquisitions and a bit of a plan and we were flying, also using players many of us had written off to get the best out of them.

If the pressure is off with essentially having to run the club like it felt he did over last summer, I think and hope he'll be able to show what he's good at again. Time off, refresh, work with your new squad and just do it Eddie.
