King Edward won us a cup though

Enjoying this recent trend of posters saying things like this sarcastically but still telling on themselves in the process

Not imo. He was the contingency plan all summer and we signed him the moment we could.

He wasn't a contingency mind, he was always in the plan as Wilson's replacement

What's that based on?

You mustn't have been a NUFC fan for long if that's the part of our history that's scarred you [emoji38]

Take a trip back in time and you'll realise how good we have it at the moment, despite it being a tough time.

My first ST was in 90/91, I’ve been around a wee while.  This isn’t particularly good at the moment.

edit: the average league finish from 90/91 to 24/25 is 13th.  We’re currently 13th.

My first ST was 1984 so I've been through all that and more.

Fair to say that the club today is slightly different today to how it was in 1990.

We are in a much better place.

No he didn't. If he had then Trafford would be in goals and Etikite or Delapp would be playing up front. He got his man in Elanga though, Forest must be laughing their heads off. Both Ramseys are underwhelming too. Big Nick was about 5th choice but I do have faith in him, if only we knew where to play him.

I get you.

This is merely a case of semantics.

Let me rephrase, Eddie gave the go ahead for all of the transfers, which comprised 240 million pounds, whether they were first choice or not.

Based on multiple reports from the North East journalists at the time.

Probably just semantics but I think we were looking for someone to compete with and push Isak, rather than just come and be backup. Either way, aye, we had him on our list weeks in advance of us actually signing him. He was obviously far from first choice but I don't think anyone could reasonably predict it turning out the way it has. It seemed like a pretty safe investment and we'd just take the hit on the fee.

I agree with this but I still think the plan was to sell Isak, I can’t see how we would have Ekitike and Isak.

We are - but I’m not sure about ‘you’ve never had it so good’ statements.  We absolutely have.

From memory the original bid was about £25m in early July, which would be below his value at the time, but not by a crazy amount.  At that money it would be pretty apparent he was a Wilson replacement.

In your opinion. We've just had the first 3 year period in my lifetime where we won a cup and qualified for the CL twice.

Playing Barca in the last 16 of the CL. Finals, semi finals etc. Countless memorable moments and most of the time a team to be proud of. Still have one of the most promising and accomplished managers in the league, who you'd hope can turn this situation around.

You could argue us challenging for the title was better but that soon unravelled. It's a perfectly valid opinion to say we have it better than ever now though regardless, whether it's your opinion or it isn't.

To be fair i don't think I worded it like that.

The Keegan years were near perfection. The best time of my NUFC supporting life.

All I wanted to stress is that while we are having a tough time at the moment, with Eddie in charge, we should have every confidence that things will improve sooner rather than later.

Keep the faith.

It’s not about the last three seasons.   This is the fourth time in my life I’ve seen us rapidly change from a good side at the top of the table to a mediocre top flight side.  Perhaps next season all will be fixed and good with the world again.  But (in my opinion - and I don’t understand why this needs to be clarified; of course it is my opinion) what we’re seeing is not acceptable given the tools at the manager’s disposal and the amount of money sunk into this squad.  We’re underperforming against squads with far smaller squads - and the ‘we’ve played loads of cup games’ stuff would be a bit easier to swallow if the manager had 1) rotated against some of the weaker teams we’d played and 2) we’d looked good before the fixture pile-up.  We’re into March and I couldn’t count the good league performances on one hand so far.  Again, that doesn’t mean that Howe should be sacked, but I’m not going to ignore the evidence in front of my eyes.  Some of the ‘everything is fine, everyone who disagrees is a bedwetter’ stuff feels like gaslighting at this point.  We’ve been utterly shite away from home this season, and now the home form is heading that way.  The players bought last summer were bought by the manager, he picks the side, he delivers the tactics.  He’s well rewarded and has been packed as far as the rules allow him to be backed - this is absolutely his squad I’m watching now (only Murphy, Schar and Willock remain from pre-Howe days).  He’s earned the credit and trust to be given the opportunity to put it right this summer - but if we’re still watching what we’ve been watching at the end of this calendar year, I’ll be joining those who think he needs to go.

It’s worth remembering who is setting the expectations here - this isn’t a bunch of supporters dopily shouting the odds and over-expecting.  The club owners and executives have repeated stated in public what the expectations are - whether they’re realistic or not is another matter.

All of which is absolutely fair 👍

I think this period is the best because of the fact we emerged from a period of despair that covered a large proportion of my adult life. I was in the process of removing myself from the club completely, considering myself a neutral and getting rid of any NUFC stuff I owned.

I know that Keegan saved the club and that period was amazing but I was a bit young to appreciate it in the same way I do now. And I didn't really experience the pain that came before. And also we didn't win anything.

For me the majority of the frustration is the regression from where we were just a couple of years ago that's the most annoying thing. We were a team that the league feared and that's disappeared. We fought tooth and nail in each game - not always successful but each opponent knew they'd been in a game an that's disappeared. We used to be hard as nails and now we're the opposite. We used to be smart and sharp in the market and bring in square pegs to fill square holes and that's also now gone to shit from what we've seen. The rate we've slipped back into the pack is alarming

We're currently 13th and have played 17 games against the teams above us -guess how many of those 17 we've won??

It's 3 (Fulham H, Everton A and City H). That's fucking abysmal. Not laying all of the blame at Howe's door for it, he's been let down badly by those above him and the players but the football performances and results have generally been really poor. He deserves the rest of the season and the summer to pull it around but we're not the ones calling the shots on how long the leash is. Bomb out of both cups, slip to 15th and lose the derby in the next 3 weeks and he'll be lucky to see the season out imho :undecided:

Even if we were in the Epstein files somewhere, I don't think I'd go this far.

After the 2-2 draw with Hull, which had the Sack Pardew protest, I couldn't be arsed with the club at all. The soul had been sucked from the stadium with SD plastered everywhere, the manager a puppet and a charlatan with no fear of the sack, our brightest signing in my lifetime in Ben Arfa being terribly mismanaged (can understand he was hard work, but could of been handled better) Shola Ameobi on the right wing.. I could go on for ages. Rafa brought a bit of hope back, but with Ashley's ownership.. we were going nowhere. Brucey was just no hope again. I watched a lot more of my local team during the dark times.. but I would never, ever class myself a neutral.

why do you think this has changed, out of interest?

It's probably a combination of many things tbh. It's a lack of leadership from the board, an underperformance from players, a lack of agility in the transfer market, a distinct change in team philosophy, a deliberate change in mentality towards games and how we play and approach them, a lack of willingness to change systems an formations which has meant we're very predictable and easier to counter, injuries to key players, key players deciding they want no part of the club, PSR difficulties which have meant we offered up players who didn't want to leave who we sold and those that (allegedly) wanted to go that we kept.

It's not falling on the shoulders of 1 person but when the shit hits the fan we all know it's the manager who gets the bullet eventually. It's not the 13 underperforming players, it's not the CEO, it's not the chairman - it's always the manger who goes

Just now, Jesse Pinkman said:

If he crashes out the cups and loses the derby he has to go, the next day. As Newcastle manager you cannot let Sunderland do the double over you.

Not sure why you would decide the future of your football club on that criteria like. Would be bizarre.

He's hardly going to 'crash out' of the cups either, he has to play 2 of the best clubs in the world to progress. Stupid way to put it.
