Nicky Butt was woeful for us, i don't remember him having many good games.

That his most memorable contribution was that overhead kick in to touch says it all

Someone did a cracking job of that in paint iirc

He’s a good player, misused at Man Utd, a proper box to box goal scoring midfielder waiting to come out. Needs certain specific type of players around him though, he’d be a nothing player here at current. Post takeover, we should be looking way ahead of the likes of him ability wise though.

When was the last time we signed a player from 'the big six'  that genuinely did well for us or actually looked like they wanted to be here? Danny Simpson? No world beater, but was reliable and didn't act like we were beneath him.

Most have seemed to act like the last pay check, or 'oh well no one else wants me so I'll go there'...2am club munter style

Isaac Hayden? - had his family issues but that was understandable given the circumstances.

If we’re talking established first-team players we must be looking back to Duff?

I was just on about the last established top 6 player we signed (could say Geremi but he was past it). To play well you’re talking Parker and he wasn’t a regular for Chelsea.

Sky Sports' Paul Merson: "I personally don't think he will. If you're Newcastle, you might spend £200m and it still might not break you into the top six. It probably wouldn't, so why would you keep on spending now if you were Ashley?

"The name of the game for Newcastle is to minimise spending and to stay in the league. It's all well and good saying you need to show ambition, but how much is that going to cost? £300m? £400m? Arsenal are eighth!

"If you're the owner of a club and no one likes you there, are you going to spend £400m to move you up two more places? If it doesn't go right, you could get relegated.

"When Rafa Benitez left, the feeling was that Newcastle would struggle but Steve Bruce has done an unbelievable job. But if I was Ashley, I wouldn't be spending the sort of money needed to just become a top-half team."

Hell of an insight, Ignore the likes of wolves and Leicester, lets just give up!!

Ignoring the fact that we need to spend money just to stop being the worst team in the league.

Merson's a fucking prick, always has been. Spent years blaming others for his problems when he's had nothing but support from them. Man's a cunt.
