Beth
Of course we also have to factor in that any good player won't want to come here unless we offer them silly money anyway.

How long is Richie going to be a decent left back? We’re running Shelvey and Hayden in the most important area of the field at the moment, that’s shite. Wilson is our only striker. Not denying there's limitations, but it's easily a competent unit that will keep its heads above water, as it did easily last year - 30 minutes during another teams' game aside. Ketsbaia
It's kind of a shame about Gallagher but I'd prefer the two loans to be Willock* and Tuanzebe. * clearly we aren't getting him permanently

KaKa
Think Willock will end up going to Crystal Palace. We'll end up with Maitland-Niles instead, who lets not forget was Bruce's initial choice last season. The goofball was just lucky Maitland-Niles chose West Brom instead and we ended up going for Willock later on.

After Wilson - who will get injured - there's one and a half senior strikers in the squad, with a total of 11 goals between them in the last two full seasons. For all Carroll was completely finished, he still gave relief to the actual strikers on 43 occasions across those two seasons (almost entirely from the bench, obviously). That's a fairly important resource when you consider fitness. I mean literally just go and get anyone. Only got a few hundred grand to spend? Fine, whatever! You could take a punt on basically anyone in the top three divisions and they'd plug the gap left by Carroll. Absolute insanity that we didn't try to sign Josh King. Free & previously played alongside 2 of our players, should have been a complete no-brainer.

Probably, but you literally just need someone who can run in order to provide an upgrade on Carroll. To not replace him at all (for all his several massive limitations) is yet another needless problem we're creating for ourselves because removing that 'option' heaps yet more pressure on Wilson. We might as well have just offered him another year if we were gonna sign no one.

However if above they are more likely to promote Tom Allan.

nbthree3
Transfer related, it's a good piece in The Athletic about how our budget works. It's not fixed and it's pretty much case-by-case. "as things stand, multiple sources expect there will only be sufficient funds to make two loan signings and one permanent addition this window as Bruce targets a left centre-back, a defensive midfielder and a No 8." "For a start, they do not have a fixed, predetermined “budget” per se. They do identify a portion of their revenue to be set aside for incomings — previously, it has been the amount remaining once operating costs are subtracted from turnover, supplemented by player sales — but that figure is flexible and can potentially be increased (or indeed squeezed) depending on which targets prove attainable." "The hierarchy are unlikely to permit the signing of two 27-year-olds for £10 million each but, should Arsenal prove willing to sell Willock for around £20 million, then Newcastle may consider exhausting their resources to secure his signature." "Under Ashley, the three major principles that have driven Newcastle’s transfer approach have included age (24 and under), potential sell-on value and quality. Unless those strict criteria were met, then substantial fees would not be spent on players — but, if they were, then Newcastle were willing to stretch to greater lengths to finance a deal they believed to be an attractive one." "What Benitez wanted was to be told you have “£x million” and you can spend it how you see fit, be that by acquiring one player or five. Yet Newcastle told him to treat every deal individually and they would consider each target on their merits. They did not want Benitez to be fixated on a set kitty because, in theory, they may reject a request for three £5 million players, but may then permit a £25 million acquisition for the “right player”." "Newcastle would not have spent £15 million on just anyone, but Lewis was 22 and being tracked by some of England’s top clubs, primarily Liverpool, which suggested genuine sell-on potential. In effect, Lewis was signed outside of Newcastle’s actual “budget” because he was deemed to be a prospect worth extending their resources for." "The Norwich winger was hardly a priority target for Benitez but, because he was 22, available for an initial £10 million and deemed likely to appreciate in value, Newcastle were keen to acquire him and so the manager brought him in, in part, because it was a deal he was able to conclude." (Murphy) "The owner was annoyed that Benitez did not permit the purchase in February 2019 and feared the club had missed the chance to sign the 22-year-old Brazilian, even claiming he offered to personally “pay” £23 million towards the fee. Benitez, though, wanted the soon-to-be 29-year-old, Salomon Rondon, instead. The Venezuelan impressively led the line, scoring 11 top-flight goals on loan on Tyneside, but his age (and admittedly high wage demands) meant Newcastle would not pursue a permanent move." “It wasn’t even as if it was him (Joelinton) or Salomon Rondon,” Ashley told the Daily Mail in July 2019. “And we told him (Benitez) that. We just wanted Joelinton secured." Edited July 29, 2021 by nbthree3
