Gives you a good idea of what he was about. Some of the stuff he did for Newcastle, the footage is almost impossible to find and that's a big shame. A lot of his Spurs and later stuff is out there, real shame he felt the need to go there but Newcastle just didn't care about competing really back then. Pretty sure all he won there was the FA cup in 91 and got badly injured in that game. That era Spurs side weren't even that good but they at least were a club who tried to win things.

He tried to break two Forest players’ legs in nasty, cowardly challenges and got the worst of it when he went for Gary Charles.  I’ve fuck all sympathy for him re that cup final.

His career was one of ‘what might have been’; there’s little footage despite all of his matches being recorded because there isn’t much to show.  That he never became a great footballer is pretty much entirely on him.

edit: Gascoigne really should be in that ‘overrated’ thread that’s been brought back from the dead.  He wasn’t the best Geordie player of that era (Beardsley) he wasn’t even the best Geordie midfielder of that era (Robson)

Wow, a lot to unpack here. Re: that cup final, yeah it was stupid and he got what he deserved that day. To roll that into him being "overrated" is kind of incredible. He made poor career choices no doubt but claiming there's not much to show, is a bit weird, there's loads of Spurs and England footage. His best Newcastle performances came in an era when footage isn't the easiest to find. Anyway, you seem to have an odd dislike of a player most would have in their top 3 NE-born players, despite leaving.

"Never became a great footballer" is absolute bollocks actually. Never realized his full potential would be fair.

As for Beardsley, he was probably my favorite all-time player but he left just the same like they all did.

He was great when he was 19.

I have several times in this thread. Peas in a pod (on the pitch).

Except Bruno can’t dribble or shoot to anywhere near the same extent Gazza could.

No and my personal comparison stopped after comparing their passion, desire and total commitment to the cause.

Fair enough.

Their footballing ‘personalities’ are a lot more comparable than their actual footballing abilities/skillsets.

I would however directly compare certainly one specific facet of their on-pitch persona/skillset...their "street" style. Their ability to play off-the-cuff perhaps outside of any tactical framework, use their elbows and physicality, drive the team forward with vision. They're dissimilar and yet similar at the same time. Struggling to find the right words

You've found the words. It's this bit. They both drive the team forward with individual ability right at the heart of the pitch. It's what I saw in January 22 when I watched a few clips of Bruno.

Overrated? Did you see him run games for us, surrounded by the likes of John Cornwall? Ask Alex Ferguson if he was overrated - he saw Gazza give Robson and co the runaround vs Man Utd more than once.

Then the season he had for Spurs following Italia 90 was just off the scale.

An absolute cock of a human being - as evidenced in the ‘91 cup final. But a sensational, genuinely generational talent.

He could literally do almost anything (very decent in the air, which gets forgotten).

Overrated? Wow…

Absolutely all of this. I saw him take games by the scruff of the neck for club and country over and over. When you factor in the dross he played with at Newcastle, that was an achievement in itself. Watch the footage of Spurs' cup run in 91, he was winning games by himself, it was gutting to watch. Off the pitch, that's an entirely different discussion.
