Yeah, the way he started the game seemed to unsettle us at the back and we conceded both goals during that first half when he seemed to be rattled. Displayname
Our defence looks fucking awful tbh. I don't know who is to blame, but it can't just be Trippier.

Shame as it was a good performance from us generally Generally I find a lot of our "dangerous play" with regards to conceding stems from players being "between the lines". I feel having a designated DM stops that. I also feel that Howe builds "relative risk" into his game on the premises that we are better than the opposition at punishing from said risk. Kinda risk versus opportunity, if you like.

Shame as it was a good performance from us generally On the first Burn steps forward out of position and misses the ball leaving Thiaw to try and cover the gap he's left, as he's trying to stay in front of Marmoush who is driving forward with the ball, as well as O'Reilly who is running into space. On the second, once the ball is played into Haaland down the channel, Thiaw is the only one that finds a man to pick up. Burn is ball watching and doesn't pick anyone up. Thiaw correctly identifies Marmoush is free and covers him, you can then see he puts his hand up to point out that Trippier should pick up O'Reilly who is making the run forward also. Trippier who should see the whole picture in front of him, is late to shift over once Thiaw picks up Marmoush, and so O'Reilly scores. Please go back and watch the highlights again. It's all right there.

Playing on a yellow all game as well for that ridiculous yellow at the beginning and also getting the majority of 50/50 given against him. Was a good old fashioned battle between him and Haaland. He can be very proud of his performance despite the unfortunate team defeat. Thought Haaland exposed him for pace a couple of times and the booking was a good example. Also felt that Burn needing to grab his shirt to keep him in check showed what a struggle it was against Haaland's pace, so theoretically he could have been sent off for a second yellow. Burn's a great defender, but like Trippier, his lack of pace will cost us on occasions.

joeyt
We usually go one v one against Haaland and it's usually Botman or Burn and he's rarely that effective against us Obviously he'll get a hat trick next month now I've said that

I felt at the moment the cross occurred, there was no reason to pick up Marmoush at the front post who was quite close to Burn anyway given the height of the cross, Thiaw vacated his zone creating a massive gap for O’Reilly to trot into. I thought multiple fucked that: Thiaw as mentioned, Trippier for the slow reaction to the man coming into the box, Elanga for watching him ghost past and didn’t bother to sprint back and of course the midfield who should be tracking runners. CPL
Thought he had a great under the circumstances. We left him 1v1 with Haaland on many occasions and being brave with the press.
TRon
The defence in general seemed to be exposed a lot at times yesterday, City players were flying through massive gaps because most of our players were caught too far forward. It was a very open game in general.

They always teach you to pick up the man closer to the ball and you really can't wait for the ball to be played first to see where it's going as that's too late. Thiaw can't just leave Marmoush free in that position, it's a simple cut back and tap in for Marmoush if that pass is picked out. Everyone has to shift over and leave the man on the opposite far side free as that is the lesser threat. Trippier shouldn't be so wide still as whoever is on the outside is not as big a danger. Once the ball is played down the channel to Haaland who has moved away from Burn, Burn has to check back to see who is free, but he never does. Ideally he picks up Marmoush, Thiaw then picks up O'Reilly and Trippier can stay where he is. Edited February 22 by KaKa
