Boro are so fucking irrelevant man, they're absolutely desperate to have a derby with some fucker. Losing to Boro is just like losing to any other team.

I’ve got two smoggie mates - one older, one younger.  Older one claims Leeds is their big game - a Yorkshire ‘derby’ (Leeds would argue that, I reckon).  Younger alternates between us and the Mackems.  My suggestion that Hartlepool is their Derby as no other fucker gives a solitary shite about them usually falls on deaf ears.  I’m only trying to help.

Boro will class anyone from Berwick Rangers to Sheffield United as a "derby" game. They don't have the numbers of support that Newcastle or Sunderland do, so I just put it down to marketing,  trying everything to get as many bums on seats as they can. Can't say I blame them really.

Fuck knows what the pyro is about the night before an away game but each to their own innit.

Been spat on, swung at and called a maggot at Boro over the years, despite not being our biggest game always has a bit of edge and used to enjoy playing them.

It’s not a Derby, but the twattish nature of their support, along with running a gauntlet outside their ground, always adds that edge to the away games, definitely.  Home games are non-entities though

Only been once, in the Championship when Carroll scored a late equaliser. Was canny lively before and after the game even though we were in an escort to the station. Much livelier than the Mackems away where you get marched through a desolate industrial estate.

Used to get very tasty especially first couple of years after riverside first opened, remember running battles after the Tino game. Last game at Ayresome when we done them in the league cup will always live long in the memory for me.

I was at that Ayresome game. I was also there a year or two before when they done us 3-0, ructions on as they say. Started off with bricks off the railway bridge, ended up with a running battle in the streets behind the ground.

I used to detest Boro when I was younger, used to listen to the 3 Legend phone in when I was a young un, was proper gutted when they won the Carling Cup. Nowadays I just see them as completely irrelevant, in fact I want them to do well if anything.

They detest us like. Crazy how we’ve not played them since that game I referred to when Carroll scored in 2010. Fuck knows when we will next meet.

Think the worst defeat to Boro in my lifetime was the Slaven hatrick at Ayresome last day of the season that condemned us to the play offs. Things got even worse a couple of weeks later, definitely character building as a young lad at the time.

Re Boro, I work down that way a fair bit and they're OK. They are looking for a place in the world as their local derbies are against teams who don't see them as their prime derby. Plus they don't hate us the way they did.

Their fans treating it like a derby is all that discerned it from any run of the mill game to me after 1992 where we moved beyond such things as being bothered about who got more attention on Look North and how biased Roger Thames was.

Knowing how much it bothered them was the only extra to a win. It wasn't in itself something to celebrate beyond any other.

When the legends finished (was on at work all the time) that rivalry pretty much did. Neither like or dislike them, don't mind one way or the other if they get promoted or not. Think the last time they had any effect on me at all was when taking a short-lived lead against us in 2009.

Yep - even though Tames was an Arsenal fan he often grated when talking about other NE clubs.

Though he also grated when talking about us - his after-the-fact commentary on NUFC matches was so obvious in its lack of spontaneity - despite having the time to prep, think and plan - he was a bane of end of season VHS tapes

I'm looking forward to the match tomorrow, and I'll be far more interested than if it was Sunderland vs Watford/Norwich etc. there's definitely an edge to the fixture.

I was also browsing a Boro forum - plenty of 'in shadow' talk on this thread, which won't particularly please any lurking Wearsiders [emoji38]
