They’ve made a rod for their own back by falsifying their attendance most weeks and then praising themselves for having big attendances when it’s clearly not the case. They’ve got zero humility 

 

I actually find the crack about their attendance to be cringe for both us and them, but there’s not many things more satisfying in life than a liar who makes false boasts being shown up for being a liar who makes false boasts 

 

So for as long as they continue to lie, I’ll continue to enjoy pointing and laughing at their empty stadium whilst they bleat on about Nissan backshifts, peak wedding season etc etc

The thing that makes them look stupid is they try constantly to bang the drum about their attendances, try to put other clubs support down, have weekly attendance threads for every match on their forum; this despite the plain obvious facts that there crowds are nowhere near what their club announces. You then have half of them stating that the official crowds are correct and their revenue accounts other half making up every excuse going to try and justify non attendees.

It's never a good idea to give tickets away.  I had the misfortune of working amongst the sad mackem bastards a lot of years ago.  A season ticket holder could be sitting next to someone who paid nowt.  It created loads of bother and many season ticket holders simply refused to renew.  Most still attended but they now went free of charge.

They still ha e a very good travelling support and to be fair, even their home support is very good compared to most clubs of their standing. They just make themselves look a bit silly with their 'official' attendances which they do purely for one reason...........us.

I mean we haven’t been out of the PL for nearly a decade either, they suffer the same situation as Man City used to. They had a hardcore of somewhere between 25-30k which can be boosted when they’re "doing well', but isn’t sustainable in the lean times. Which is why them building the SOL solely to have a bigger capacity than the 36k SJP had at the time was always a folly

If they don't get back into the Premiership soon they face a real prospect that younger fans will never become Sunderland followers at all.  So many kids away from the big clubs simply follow the teams that their favourite players play for, what happens when those kids start following Isak, Bruno or Gordon?  You can give away tickets to as many schools as you like but when the kids have the option of watching a top team play with their favourite players participating or watching a mid-table Championship game against Plymouth or Stoke you cannot be that surprised when no one turns up.

 

Look at Bolton or Wigan.  Two teams that had a greater impact on the Premiership than Sunderland ever had who have much bigger teams on their doorsteps, both teams languishing in League One. That's the future Sunderland face, they've got an owner with no connection to the club who could sell up at any time, dwindling attendances and uninspiring players.  Promotion and weekly humiliation in the Premiership or lower league oblivion.  Couldn't happen to a nicer team.

Thing is they're doing it now with the Plymouth gate from 15years ago.  If they're stupid/desperate enough to start attendance debates given how one-sided it is then they deserve all they get.

They got 15,000 pre PL in 92 when they got to the cup final, 15,000 against Arsenal no less in 97, 15,000 yesterday and had gates half that amount. Its standard for them generationally and whatever division they're in

Second one not comparable according to them . A team full of generational talents and yet they can only muster a crowd of 15000 and then try and justify it with multiple excuses. It's just as well it was a normal Saturday kick off, as had it been midweek, you probably would've had more Stoke fans there

That’s down to Tynemouth MP Alan Campbell. I believe he’s on the board there, or has something to do with them, and Whitley Bay High. He’s a Sunderland season ticket holder.
