Overrated players

I know he’s not “rated” per se, but Shane Long maintained a PL career on being able to “run around”.  Was always randomly linked to Arsenal

It feels more like a personal dislike than a lack of appreciation

To be fair, I guess I had Carlos and while he wasn't great defensively he was so fun to watch.

Thats exactly it. I explained why I didn't like him, while also acknowledging he was a very good, at times, great player and feted to the point of making me ill. I also think this can encapsulate the fan experience, knowing a player is good, perhaps hating him for that as he performs against your club so well and so often.

Carlos was a limited defender like you said, but an utterly brilliant character and scored 2 or 3 of the best goals i've ever seen. From left back.

Shane Long used to have Coloccini's life, it was horrible.

Like how someone like Ricardo Fuller would become Drogba against us randomly

And Victor Anichebe would become prime Shearer whenever lining up against us

Declan Rice - Already been mentioned before. Good, solid midfielder but plenty just like him in Europe.

Jack Wilshere - Honestly had no idea what he was good at yet and almost always injured but inexplicably made every England squad under Hodgson.

Yup, we had a few like that who would suddenly reincarnate as Torres whenever they played us.

Wilshire’s game against Barca was one of the best I’ve ever seen from an English mid, and this was prime Xavi/Iniesta/Busquets. The injuries and lifestyle killed him.

Smells like a new thread to me....."crap players who turned it up to 12 when against us"

Could the same not be argued for Carlos and Cafu? They were basically pioneers for the way modern wing backs play

Yes imo, players who’ve innovated a position before it’s time. Could argue Nueuer as well.

Vidic was widely considered to be one of the best CB's in premier league history, but he was like bambi on ice against Torres.

Personally I think if you can't enjoy players like Del Piero, Bergkamp and to a lesser extent Berbatov, there's no point in watching football.

Some of the most graceful or inventive footballers with the ball.

You'd think the Bergkamp spinning his man goal against us would have kept him out of this thread.

Right when I leave this thread, you reel me back in.   Fuck off. First real legend of the game. The king of football. Show some respect.

They'd be awesome now, and were in the mid-90's but there was a long time in between where they would have been considered liabilities

Tricky thread and topic because there are so many players that could be argued were good, even close to great and yet you don't like them because of x or y and it's all just opinion anyway. Couple more:

Mendieta - memory might be playing tricks, quite good at Lazio but can't recall him doing anything for Boro in the 90s and was a Spanish international for ages

Marcelo - I don't know if he's "overrated" per se but I think he's absolutely terrible. Positionally a joke, runs around like fucking Benny Hill

They call him one of the best left-backs ever - but is Ashley Cole really on the same level as Maldini? Perhaps one of those ones I didn't appreciate enough during his playing career

Different sort of full-back but Ashley Cole was world class.

Yeah that was crazy, Torres seemed to have him completely on skates, it was bizzare. He just couldn’t cope with him

Trent Alexander-Arnold plays in a way I've never ever seen from a right back. Could be unique to him or something that's brought in by other teams, but he's basically a David Beckham who plays right back.
