gdm
42 minutes ago, Rod said: His first bit of transfer business was to sell David Ginola for 2 million pounds and replacing him with Des Hamilton who cost 2.2 million pounds. That alone deserved the sack! Oh and this is only my opinion, Ian Rush was one of the worst strikers that I've seen in a black & white shirt. If not the worst and I've seen a few believe me. He was about 38 at the time tbf
ramirez
Barnes was decent tbf, and I never rated him that much before hand, although I was too young to see him at his peak and he became a target for England fans in the ill fated USA 94 qualifiers. When we appointed dalglish I just assumed he would sort the defence out and we would win the league, how wrong I was. Still some good moments under his tenure and my first away games with my mates etc.
enthusiast
Dalglish gets some small credit for signing Given, Speed, and Solano, but in all other respects was an absolute disgrace. To go from the Keegan years to that was like having a bucket of ice water thrown in your face. There's definitely been worse, but I'll never hate them as much for the simple reason that I'll never care as much as I did when I was 14/15.
Jonas
3 hours ago, Ashley17 said: I’ve watched most of the 97/98 season on vhs this week (that is my video being quoted above) and I fucking hate the bloke. Yes, there were circumstances - we had little money, the squad was ageing, Shearer got injured and so on. But he set the team up so negatively, he even said he was happy with a draw at Stevenage. He was lucky Barnes played as well as he did because Rush was tragic. But even off the pitch, I don’t feel like he was ever really into it. He was also the polar opposite of KK, I mean look at this and contrast it to how full of beans Keegan was unveiling Warren Barton That's the narrative but its just not true and his job here doesn't deserve the cop out. 17.4m 97/98 (nearer 20m if we include Hamilton), 13m for 98/99. Easily competitive with anyobdy's and comfortably more than Wenger spent at Arsenal winning and defending a double from being behind us, Its not even far behind Manchester United's spend. There's an arguement he brought money in - made a small profit (like £1m) in 97/98 and lost 11m in 98/99 (so he didn't even do that) Even so KK probably broke even building that team in 95 (Venison, Mathie, Robinson, Cole, Drysdale, Fox, Neilson, Sellars paid for Shaka, Barton, Huckerby, GInola, Ferdinand, Gillespie) so it could have been done far better. Everything else totally agree with Edited January 16 by Jonas
Ashley17
It just felt like it was sell to buy, and those being sold were proven and loved but ultimately approaching a time where value would start to dip. Those that came in were obviously much worse. It would have been interesting to see if things would have been much different if Shearer had stayed fit. Other than Gillespie there wasn’t an awful lot of creativity left, I don’t think Barnes was part of the plan he was just a freebie roll of the dice when Shearer got crocked. Even after selling Tino he got Andreas Andersson who was absolutely shite. The money really wasn’t invested well.

Jonas
Never wanted him. A mate went over to the unveiling, can see him on some of the footage near the Milburn steps, chanting "Kenny, Kenny, Kenny" can proudly say I couldn't bring myself because I hated his Blackburn teams to a perhaps irrational degree and thought he'd be the bad fit he turned out to be. Would have accepted the pragmatic defensive mindedness for trophies and like people said part expected it (additions of Hendry and Flowers might have just about done it) but all we got was the pragmatic defensive mindedness. Got behind him at the ground though (from Ashley17's video the other day. ) . Wonder if the fog that night, that didn't effect us in the slighest, was the reason the mackems only got 15,000 at home to Arsenal.
Wolfcastle
Ginola and Tino's days were numbered as soon as Dalglish arrived tbh. His pragmatic dour style was never incorporating those players into one of his teams. Think Tino got a reprieve due to Shearer's injury. Was no need for the melodrama re Ginola's transfer to Spurs that foreshadowed the Stevenage and Derby bullshit Even though Ferdinand was an enforced sale, he wasn't enforced to spend more than he recouped for that on Andersson and Guivarch on top of Tomasson who I thought was even worse than Rush for us. At least Rush ran around. Edited January 16 by Wolfcastle
Optimistic Nut
Had no issue selling Ferdinand. He was hitting 30, starting to pick up injuries, we got our £6m back and he had one good season after he left us, which was about 6 years later in a relegated Leicester side. The way we spent the money was atrocious though. Not helped by the fact we had no reserve team and we had to pad that out with the likes of Brady, Serrant, Pinas, Coppinger, Gudjonsson, etc just to get it started up again. kingxlnc
Guivarch gets the roughest of the rough rides. He only played 4 games and he was coming from the French league so perhaps needed to adapt. He has been top scorer twice and was France’s first choice striker for that World Cup in 1998… that they won. Would have liked to have seen him settle in and play longer, couldn’t have done worse than the likes of Anderson and Tomasson after all. He even scored 1 goal in those 4 games. From all the terrible signings we’ve had he gets mentioned as one of the worst in all time PL history not just for Newcastle but for all time PL. that’s crazy because I can name at least 10 more worst Newcastle signings
