Question for older fans...

Have you ever known it this bad? An owner blatently taking the p*ss out of thr club and fans.

It's one thing being s*** but at least trying, then there's this.

Late 80s/pre Hall?

Dunno, can you elaborate.

Was just a suggestion. I know there was The Magpie Group and the protests against McKeag for instance.

Oh yea, don't really know anything about it, i did watch that thing on youtube about it like.

I started to follow us properly just after Keegan left the first time, i don't know whether to be upset i missed those days, or grateful i don't have the scar from not winning the title.

My best times were the Bobby days, i had a season ticket with my dad, Man U home 4-3, the Juve game, Leeds away 4-3, going f***ing mental in the front room when Bellamy scored against Feyenoord.

I want to f***ing cry now

At least you've got those memories, there's a generation of Newcastle fans who have only experienced Ashley

Agreed and i feel for them.

I feel for all of us tbh, it's a disgrace that we have to go through this s***.

Apart from those who still go next season of course, they can f*** off and are spoiling it for the true fans. I could half understand people going with Rafa here, no excuse now.

As a kid then  I remember the late 70s/early 80s being bad.  We were relegated in 78 and I'm sure there  was a midweek game v Norwich where the crowd was about 7K that season. Club was skint. They'd  demolished the leazes end and it stood only partially rebuilt, was just a terrace with a wall behind, for years. Unbelievably Keegan came as a player in 82 and things took off but Mckeag and co were a bit like Ashley in the respect that they'd  sell their granny. Once KK left Beardsley, Gazza and Waddle were all sold within the space of a few  years. Thing is nowadays is that Ashley's clearly is in it for himself and has an ulterior motive  as owner.

One thing i noticed during the Keegan years is that alot of our away fas sat down, why?

Was safety more strict with Hillsborough still fresh in people’s minds potentially?

Was thinking that maybe.

I started going away in 2001 and everyone stood.

The club is worse off now than it’s ever been. I wasn’t around during the McKeag years of course and while it’s undeniable the stadium is much better, our finances are healthier, the training ground and other facilities are much better and some of our league finishes have been higher. We are more behind everyone else today than we ever were then. We weren’t the only club in debt, with a dilapidated stadium, a local authority field for a training ground, yo-young between divisions and being raided by others for our better players.

Unlike today, however, the owners didn’t rob the club of its own money and sold to reinvest and in the end simply couldn’t do what Sir John Hall did with less of his own money not because they didn’t want to or never even tried because they did, they just didn’t have the expertise, business acumen, credit line and above all else the entrepreneurial spirit of risk taking.

There was hope though, there was belief, there was an attempt at least to compete. Fans had Keegan, big money signings like Mirandina come in, the club had a good youth set up and could at least produce some good players, most notably Gazza. They weren’t sold because the owners wanted to pocket the money, they were sold because we couldn’t pay them more than others and to fund stadium improvements and new players.

The board weren’t nasty people, they weren’t robbing the club or asset stripping. They were decent people who were fans like any other who unlike Ashley put their money into the club, or some money because it was an honour, NUFC was something worth buying a stake in more than stocks and bonds or whatever else. Who doesn’t want to own their own piece of history, to be part of an institution and the honour of being a trusted custodian. That’s why people donate to museums, build libraries, join the board of schools and sporting clubs like a cricket or golf club.

That’s how NUFC came to be in actual fact and wouldn’t have survived without patrons, stake holders, trustees, committees, members of the board and so on like the McKeags.

They were guilty as charged for being shit businessmen, for their lack of entrepreneurial spirit and lots of other things, but ultimately they were stuck in a time warp and so was the club and no matter what they did, how much they spent, who they got as manager or where we finished or didn’t, their time was up, they were being made extinct and so was NUFC under them.

I k ow lots of people who were there when crowds dropped to under 15k watching a team of absolute dross who many a s day league player would have been an improvement at a ground that today wouldn’t pass as a shed and they to a person have told me how grim it was and how awful everything was.

Myself I’d rather support that kind of club with those kind of gates at a run down ground watching a team of no hopers than support Ashley’s NUFC if everyone involved cared and did their best for the club, for the city, for the fans just as I’d rather support NUFC in the conference than in the PL under Ashley because I can get behind anyone, cheer on and support a good cause that tries, gives their best and cares.

Newcastle United isn’t something that can buy my love, passion, loyalty and sense of belonging, pride, honour and identity with a modern stadium, internationals, a win, a trophy, premier league football. I refuse to buy into something solely run and existing for one person, to make another business more profitable, where money comes first, sport doesn’t even matter. That’s just another business, another store, another shop, a product.

That’s what Ashley has turned NUFC into, just some shop selling stuff. There are no fans, just customers who kid themselves otherwise. No no no, this isn’t like going to Argos, this isn’t like going to the Metro Centre.

Well it fucking is, it’s not a football club or a football team.

Just checking NUFC official twitter account. Every tweet they make, get +100 angry tweet responses from furiated fans. Hate is getting new heights.  These latest tweets about trip to China are especially embarassing by the club. But fans are on it

I remember a night match v Wrexham around 1980 which, thankfully, was abandoned at half time. Think they guessed the crowd was 4.5k, I managed to get a seat in east stand from a season ticket holder who probably knew it would not finish. Crowds were regularly around 14k to 17k but I was younger and had hope. Keegan saved the club.

The Hall board took out its fair share of money, but they always invested to improve, Rangers at the time were huge and were one one of the biggest grossing teams in respect to merchandise their shirts were sold all over Europe, (Benidorm, Magaluf, Aya Napa, Malia ect) the man behind this was Freddie Fletcher, Sir John took him and we took off, Freddy Shepard was the muscle, Malcolm Dix, John Waugh and Peter Ratcliffe got the fans on board and the whole thing just snowballed.

I'm out till Ashley goes, but I'm ready and willing to support other like minded fans in his removal.

No previous regime actively and deliberately forced out a world class manager.

As was mentioned previously, when McKeag was in charge, the club had very little money. Given how much is in the sport now, this is the worst it's ever been IMO.

The problem is i bet loads of people complaining on social media will be rocking up at the Arsenal game.

You just need to look at NUFC.com, Biffa moaning on his website yet he has no intention of boycotting.

SJH never took from the club/business. The money the made they were paid from the pockets of others like stock market investors when we become a PLC or Mike Ashley when he bought them all out. That’s why I don’t begrudge SJH his money and even FS because for all his dodgy business nepotism deals, he worked for his money and a lot of his money went on buying shares for a bigger stokehold. I begrudge someone like Douglas Hall because he did fuck all to justify what he made, he owed it all to his daddy.

Back to SJH he saved the club, he was the only person willing to front the money to buy up all the shares and even offered his shares back to the fans to create a trust and become owners of the club in effect. Once that was a no go he said from the start, if he was to get involved, it’s a business thing and made no secret he was wanting a return. He made his money buy turning NUFC around as a business and on the pitch with help from KK, FS and Fletcher and he made the club so valuable the club become a PLC which is where he made his money from and later from selling to Ashley.

He never drew a wage and never loaned the club money. He didn’t get his 50k he did put in back which was his money and he was socially conscious from start to finish when he was hands on. This wasn’t some cheap quick buck for him, he give his best and cared, and why wouldn’t he, he’s a proud man, a local man, a fan and the honour, prestige and opportunity to turn the club around outweighed any money motive.

Without him, we would have folded or would be more of a Bristol City/Plymouth type club. No-one else put their money where their mouth was or was willing to take the club on and cared enough to sacrifice so much time and effort free of charge and if rewarded in the end or not materialises, a care of duty is worth it with or without. But hey, he’s a cunt for selling to Ashley and a greedy bastard who made a killing.

Yea, deliberately getting rid of a world class manager who saw the potential and wanted to grow the club and ultimately win major trophies, how can anything be worse than this?

Have we ever before had an owner deliberately fucking the club over out of spite?

Fact check.........Sir John pissed loads of money away at Wynyard and was desperate for cash when he sold Newcastle, Freddy Shepard was in hospital and would never have sold if he wasn't so ill.

Fact check, show me the money SJH took out of the club, i.e. the club’s own money. He didn’t. I mean, when he sold NUFC to Ashley, it was his money he pocketed not money belonging to the club. Ashley is the pick pocket here!

Oh and pissed loads of money away needs some context. We aren’t talking Championship player transfer fees here and this is home improvements pissing money away not Ashley pissing money away at the casino.

Your absolutely correct Sir Johns end game was to make Newcastle as successful as possible and then either float or sell, Ashley wants money now and we give it to him
