Said this a few times now, but just because we pay Isak 250k doesn't mean we have to automatically give everyone else a pay rise. Tonali is probably the only other absolutely elite player on our books, Bruno is fantastic but with the lack of pace downside, he probably couldn't command the really big wages.

What do you think? He'll accept 200k a week when he sees every other elite striker getting 300k a week?

 

I think we definitely keep him one more season, after that we need to find some way to pay top wages or we'll have to sell him and buy a striker who's not reached that level yet.

I know the numbers are largely guesswork but it's telling that none of the top 30 reported salaries are Newcastle players. It shows the gap we have to bridge, otherwise we cannot be anything more than a stepping stone.

 

Also maybe highlights why the players we're targetting to improve us just aren't interested, because the only players who can improve us would likely have a claim to be 30 best players in the league but would have no chance of getting paid as such.

 

As I said previously, it all ties back to sponsorship - we need massive new deals. 2/3 years qualifying for the CL, a cup win too, surely that justifies massive new deals? Not of the level of Man City etc, but a lot more than our current deals. It's disappointing that we haven't announced a load of these, especially given we're backed by a literal government with loads of nationally owned companies under their belt.

And your point is? We're not Liverpool man. They've just spent near enough £300 million and can pay huge wages. We can't do that unless we're prepared to do the same with Bruno, Tonali, Gordon. We're too hamstrung.

It's obviously just me but I hate the thought of throwing massive wages around because we are shit scared to lose a player. I know he's elite, well when he's fit. It just rankles. Feels like being held to ransom and I hoped we'd gone above that.

Reality is the greater the progress and the increased elite players in your squad, the more power the players have. The elite pool is very small & players have all the power. To retain & continue to attract more, you simply have to pay them what the market dictates

Doesn't matter who it's coming from, was also obvious 300k p/w was going to be the minimum he was after. If we are going to price him like one of the best players in the world he is within his right to demand to be paid like one.

Yeah, clearly. But I don't have to like it. I suppose the fact we're struggling to get bodies through the door means we can afford to pay him what he likes.

We should give him a contract that gives him £250k p/week for the next 12 months & also a release clause of £150m for next summer only. If he isn't sold next summer then his wage increases to £300k p/week for the remainder of his contract & the release clause drops off.

Say it how you like but him asking for £300k a week is partially stopping us from signing players this summer. It’s a huge chunk. I remember Waugh (may have been someone else) writing that there is a consensus going around this summer that we might hold back on transfers just so that we can give players like Isak, Tonali etc new contracts, so that we can demand more for them when they’re sold.
 

Not his fault, we haven’t grown our commercials enough to match our on pitch growth. It would have been impossible to really.

It is a huge chunk, but it should (should...) be doable. He is on 120k currently, right? So it's a 170k increase. We have lost Longstaff and Wilson's wages, that should get close to covering his increase. It's just how close are we to our limit and how does that effect signing other players.

I think people understand perfectly well. Isn't it a little uncomfortable to you though, that a player who represents a city with some areas of extreme poverty and unemployment can have a player on £300,00 a week. I've always said I love the lad but fkn hell man, he plays football. Honestly this is the kind of thing that turns me away from football. Even more than our owners.

I guess his argument would be he can get that elsewhere without any trouble at all.

 

Sooner than later we will need to have our top wages being around that figure, to be attractive to top targets.

£300k is ridiuclous, but he's streets ahead of Ekitike who's getting £270k p/w. Assume he's looked at what Ekitike is getting and thinks he can get way more than that, rightly or wrongly.
