We got Bruno and Tonali for not much more than they paid for Rice

Rice is obviously quality player, but they could have signed James Ward-Prowse and probably have picked up more points this season.

I didn't see it as shitting on the players, more shitting on the fees/spending.

Aye he's a good player, the fee was absurd and it's funny he's now a glorified set piece specialist because Arteta apparently cannot set a team up without Saka in it.

Those two combined cost less than Rice, I thought? Circa £35-40m and £50-55m for Tonali. I thought Rice was £100-105m?

Not so sure on that second paragraph  I think Rice is a great player. Certainly not been as effective this season under Mikel Pulis’ new setup.

There’s always an English premium, but regardless Rice is a superb midfielder and we’ve seen that when he played against us in the past for West Ham and for Arsenal.

Bruno and Tonali are clearly excellent midfielders too.  Push comes to shove I think Rice is just about the best player of the three, but there’s not much in it.

The James Ward-Prowse comment was a jibe at the fact Rice's most import quality has become his ability to whip a lethal ball in. Like I said he's a quality midfielder

He hasn't improved Arsenal though, not that he personally would have been a bad buy in isolation but he was part of them spunking a load of money to go backwards.

Yeah.  I was talking to my Arsenal supporting mate the other day.  Don't worry, one of the sound ones.  Said we're the best team to come to the Emirates and properly did a job on them.  Made it so that most of their chance were rushed, frustrated them, defended so well for the most part etc.

Anyway, I digress.  He was saying they have spent loads of money on what have ended up being squad players.  They still rely so much on Saka, for his goals, assists, creating space for everyone else, his great delivery from set pieces.  So everything in an attacking sense, basically   I know most teams would struggle without their star player.  But you would have thought they would at least have a couple of other dangerous attacking players they could call on.

Still no striker, loads of sort of middling (by their standards) midfielders, a lot of defensive options.  Just lacking standouts at the business end of the pitch.  He just thinks for the most part, the money has been wasted and they've regressed as a footballing side.

If we don’t get champions league I think it’s pretty likely that he’ll go (champions league, tilt at league title, massive wage increase) and we’ll completely revamp the side with the money moving forwards. If we get champions league no way he goes.

Either way we win, but I’d obviously prefer the first scenario. As I’ve said before, of all our “purples” Isak is the one I’d be most wary of losing as he’s irreplaceable, whereas I think the likes of Gordon, Bruno, Botman and even Tonali would be missed but could be replaced with similar quality players allowing to further develop the squad.

It's funny because in that infamous draw which broke Arteta, where were were pressing teams off the park, went to the Emirates and had to resort to a low block and shithousing within 5 minutes as they played through us with ease.

That Arsenal seems to have just disappeared. Arteta's clearly a good manager, but he's fucked something major up in the past year or so.

Such a depressing thread for the best player we’ve had for decades.

It’s been like this for time immemorial. Best player at the club, one of the shittest threads on the forum.

Player interviewed in own dressing room says nice things about club shock

Always nice to hear positive words, but this kind of thing is pretty meaningless in terms of telling us anything at all about his long-term thoughts etc.

Not saying all players will always say nice things about their own club, just that when they do it's not really that telling. He's said pretty vanilla things there, in a scripted, planned interview from a friendly interviewer.

If you're going to take the "who cares" attitude to people's opinions on an internet message board, it's probably best you log off and find something else to do. Literally the purpose of this place is for people to post opinions.

He is a good player but it's a fair point that we got Bruno and Tonali combined for the sort of money they spent on Rice.

I think Tonali will be a better player too. Bruno's a different kind of midfielder, has some obvious weaknesses, and isn't as 'complete', but Tonali can pretty much be directly compared. If offered now I wouldn't swap either for him.

Rice is an elite player, with the added "home grown" label.

Whilst we got Bruno and Tonali for the price of Rice, we'd not sell them for that price combined. We'd look for £100m each I'd imagine, and if you consider Rice to be in the same bracket footballing-wise (It feels churlish to suggest he isn't) then they've not really overpaid - especially since he's English so doesn't take up an overseas place.

Because we got bargains doesn't mean they overpaid.

They've overpaid because he hasn't improved them. I don't think his price was wrong in that market, it was just a bad buy in combination with what else they were doing.

To expand on this, Arsenal thought they were pretty much a settled team, and like City were in the state of being able to improve their squad with huge buys every year. They weren't and they should have spent that £100m better.

They are now signing zubimendi, who is another defensive minded midfielder.

Rice and Zubimendi together is like when Southgate used to play rice and Phillips together, it’s solid but lacks creativity.
