Don't forget it's also a route back to the CL if you slip behind in the league. Agree with what someone said earlier. My main desperation for reaching CL last year and why that last Everyon game felt like torture when we lost and thought we'd messed up was that it would mean we lost Isak and possibly others.

Well we lost Isak anyways and tanked in the league this season and will lose others this summer.

So yeah I would have preferred Villa to have got CL and us Europa in hindsight because I think it would have meant a better season of bedding in new players and probably a realistic chance to win a trophy and gain CL qualification for the next year.

Aye, last summer literally killed the 'need to get champions league to sign/keep better players' myth.

Players don't give two fucks about Champions League or Europa League, they care about how much they can get paid.

You can't say if we had failed to get CL we'd have won this - Just doesn't work like that.  We had a good CL campaign - I enjoyed seeing us play against the likes for Barcelona, and revenue wise we made tens of millions which will help us strengthen this Summer.

Just be eternally grateful and relieved we won a trophy last season as it would have been utterly embarrassing if Palace, Spurs, West Ham & Villa had all mopped up and we were still chasing one.

Not that long since west ham and man utd won summit either

So make that 10 in the last 3/4 years

Honestly think it shows the Premier League is very competitive. I'm convinced no Europe is huge for us next season.

Yeah exactly. Absolutely huge. Needed it.

Almost like the old format was fine as it was and we didn't need a Super League after all :)

Precisely. Not going to happen because the game has long gone far too far down the soulless road of greed and corruption, but...

- The premier competition should be a knockout competition (let's call it The European Cup) between 32 clubs that won their respective leagues, with the weaker nations having to qualify among themselves.

- The secondary competition should have a similar set up (let's call it the UEFA Cup) involving the runners up in their respective national leagues.

- A third competition should be a 32 club knockout competition involving Cup winners, and possibly clubs finishing third or fourth in their respective leagues. This competition could be limited to, say, the leading 12 European leagues.

- none of these competitions should use a seeding system and all ties should have home and away legs.

Didn't say that, said we would have had a realistic chance at winning it. Which we would have. Just look at our European and domestic cup performance this season. Did well in CL until we dropped off a cliff defensively against Barca and knocked out of both cups in later stages by the eventually winner of both, Man City.

We wouldn't have faced anyone anywhere near as tough as those two in the Europa. Plus it would have meant easier fixtures to bed in the likes of Woltemade, Wissa, Elanga and, Ramsey.

So yeah I stand by my comment, we would have had a realistic chance of winning it.

Don't think it's that simple.

Why would you sign with us for a year of champions League when you can join man u etc who in reality are probably better placed to win stuff and qualify long term.

Emery is the EL GOAT. 5 titles with 3 different clubs is some feat.

All with Villa in their name.

If it is and we get Europe again we have to learn to live with it the season after. We cant just keep struggling in the league every time we get it.

They didn't look like a club anywhere near qualifying for the Champions League or winning owt this time last year.

Plus we failed to keep our best player despite winning a trophy AND qualifying for the CL, what more could we have done as a club, other than offering massive wages?

They don’t care about qualifying for it, the top players want to win it.  If Villa had finished 5th then 6th would’ve qualified.  The bar is pretty low for qualification these days - playing in it is hardly a massive achievement.

It won’t help us strengthen this summer at all - we got the revenue this season, not next season.  We’ve spent our CL money - that’s how you’ve been able to enjoy watching Wissa and Elanga this year.

Yewrup for me but that’s just because I prefer European nights.

The biggest test for europa will be next season with 2 or 1 prem teams with little to no european experience vs some top european teams. I cant see brighton or bournemouth winning this next season. It was a breeze for villa because they are a UCL level team as the league shows with the king of Europa managing them.

Impressive that Emery doesn’t have enough time for training, doesn’t have injury crisis, and keep on losing players due to PSR, and still able to win a Europe Cup and finish top 5 in the league

Dunno if it's been asked, but would we have walked the final like that?

Not the way we've been playing. We likely wouldn't have made the final.

Europa. Don't think continental/international players and their agents give a fuck who wins the FA cup.

Europa as it gets you into the Champions League. FA Cup just for nostalgic purpose but having the final a week before the league season ends has put me off a bit.
