Anthony Gordon: will return to training "in next few days" (Howe)

Recommended Posts

The appeal is almost always done and dusted for a red card before the next game, no? Why would they take over a week until after West Ham or after the final to review it?

We didn’t appeal as there would have been no chance of it being overturned. I’m sure the club would have even sought some advice. Possibly from ex-refs and explored all avenues. Similar to what Forest were doing with Clattenburg.

So pissed with him still. We have injuries to contend with, but this was completely avoidable. The last thing needed was such a petulant action from one of our better players. It's just fucking braindead.  He certainly picked the right time to cause maximum damage.

It really wasn’t that bad. He acted a little too aggressively and was very unlucky the ref went for the red card.

It’s not like he slapped someone or took an action that’s inevitably a red card. It was very random.

It’s a big loss in terms of you need to utilise the subs at Wembley as tiredness always creeps in as game wears on. However, he’s done fuck all against both scouse clubs since coming here and his composure goes completely, not sure he would have done much in the final.

Urm St James Park last year against Liverpool in that infamous game where he literally tore TAA a new one?

Yeah, he plays well against Liverpool. He's got two goals and an assist in 4 starts against them and has regularly given TAA a tough time.

He’s getting what he deserved in missing the final, it was moronic and petulant and as blatant a red card as you’ll get in the modern game.

It’s a shame that we share his punishment tbh.

I don’t know what people get out of hammering a player when he clearly did not get what he deserved.

I just can’t get my head around anyone thinking missing 3 games for pushing someone a bit harder than normal is fair.

I don’t know if it’s because people love to hate Anthony Gordon or secretly still think he’s a scouse rat, or what.

He pushed someone so he deserves to miss a cup final?

He pushed someone in the same way that Duran itched Schars back.

And Duran didn’t miss any cup finals because of it.

I was one of the few on here who defended his signing at the time, and think that the lad has been a good player for the club.  But I’ve no sympathy for him missing the final - it was an idiotic thing to do, it was violent conduct, and he absolutely deserves his ban.  Nothing should be held against him when he comes back, but it wasn’t an ‘unlucky’ red card.

He put his hands in his face.  So yes, he deserved an obvious red card and a suspension

Because Duran’s team didn’t have a cup final a fortnight later.  Gordon’s did.

Well aware of that, and ultimately, rules is rules etc. But for the ‘offence’ that was committed to result in missing a prestige cup final, is really very harsh, even if nothing can be done about it.

We demanded that the players were to go out and ‘forget about the final, and play at 100%’. Then one of them oversteps the mark and it’s ’fucking idiot, can’t believe he did that before the final’.

Giving 100% doesn't equate to attempting to push someone's head off their shoulders. It's not a contradiction to expect players to give 100% but be cross when they do what he did.

That said, as I posted in here when it happened he's a young lad who's fucked up and I'll not pillory him for it. Shit happens. He seems like the reflective type who'll learn, so if he does then great.

Of course, as I said he overstepped the mark, but when you want your plays to play on the edge that will happen occasionally, especially, as you say with younger players.

From time to time he ends up in situations where his emotions gets the better of him. I think it's something we just got to accept is within him. He'll be back soon and continue to do well. Barnes will handle the business in the meantime.

I was so pissed off with him getting himself suspended, mainly because I just had a feeling he was going to put in a massive performance in the final and be a real nuisance. I feel he was one of the few we really couldn't be without to have a chance. The others were Isak, Tonali, Hall and Botman and we already lost two of them aswell.

So it's gonna be a hell of an ask but just gotta hope the whole team can play the game of their lives.
