England’s Anthony Gordon

Recommended Posts

Glad this got bumped because I forgot that he was absolutely brilliant in that first half. So direct, tricky and dangerous. He's so good at getting the ball forward at times.

Not for the first time this season he didn't get on the scoresheet when he really deserved too. If Tino doesn't leather the ball quite so hard in the first half, it's a tap-in, then you've got Wilson refusing to pick his head up right at the end for another.

Every time i see him play i feel like there is still something missing! he's improved his end product and puts a lot of effort on the pitch but i think there is still a lot he can improve on especially in the final third.

He’s in the conversation for our best player IMO. Such a clever player, technically good and dangerous throughout most games. Big fan.

Think he’s been off it too much this season to be in that conversation. He’d be in it if his form matched last season. I liked him more today though, he was back to cutting inside neatly and driving us on in that first half. Much better from him

I find him canny frustrating this season tbh. Feel like he's never really got going with any real consistency.

Clearly a very good player and when he's on his game he's unplayable, just don't think he's found the form he had prior to the Euros.

I think he’s better in the games where Hall is able to get forward and provide the width for Gordon to make runs inside more often. Movement is the best part of his game, so it’s a bit limiting when he ends up having to hang out on the touchline.

Considering he is now likely to be one of our top earners and what his value is to us. I think he is still very raw in some ways as a player.

I don’t think his finishing, crossing or passing is anywhere near an elite level for the position.

It’s more how fast and direct he can be and his tireless work rate that make him a good player. He has developed that little 180 turn and sort of false touch and step this year to find space really well. Which tends to work every time.

I agree with others in here that he was top drawer first half today. But the season as a whole hasn’t been good enough IMO.

Hopefully he's up against Trent in the final. Showed last season how much trouble he can cause him and as Doku proved last night, Trent is an awful 1v1 defender.

I think he'll be really up for the final having been cup tied last time, but hopefully not overly so and can maintain composure.

He's had flashes this season but hasn't hit the same levels as last.  Cross/final ball has been lacking of late.

I’m hoping he can take his box instincts to another level. Not sure if he has the finishing ability.
I compare him a little to Sadio Mane. Fast, great engine, hard worker. Sadios movement and timing of the runs was elite. With Gordon he doesn’t have elite technical ability and I don’t think his finishing will be as good as Manes in the box. But I think Gordon can sniff out the goals.

He’s absolutely class and there shouldn’t be any knocking of him. He was left out to dry by an ultra conservative England manager in the summer, then had a delayed pre-season with us. Took him a while to get up to the speed of everybody else because of that but he did because he put the graft in because he’s a proper pro with a great head on his shoulders.

He’s gonna’ get double figures again this season for goals and won’t be far off the same with assists. He walks into any clubs’ LW spot in the country. He loves it in Newcastle and basically told Liverpool and whoever else to get fkd in the summer. Let’s just be proud and happy that he plays for us.

He's nothing like Mane who had a lot of tech as you mention. Similarities start and end with pace except Mane could use his pace alongside his tech, Gordon's more of a willing roadrunner.

I think Gordon's box instincts are good and that was one of Mane's strengths. But Gordon doesn't have that late run-in-the-box type movement and he's an inferior finisher off both feet.. and in the air. Mane was a top bins lad, Gordon likes to shoot low and safe.

One of the things I associate with Mane most is the sharpness of the mind and feet, getting scrappy goals. I think Gordon has that ability.

Not meaning to come across combative but you compare him to Mane and then correctly highlight a few major attributes that he lacks (movement, finishing, technique, aerial prowess, dribbling(my addition)) in comparison.

I think Gordon plays like a better Jacob Murphy, grafters who both play head down and direct with the ultimate intention of getting a shot off. He lacks the all round game (due to his technical limitations) to be compared to Mane imo.

came into the game thinking a big part of our game plan would be getting him to run at Trent and we played him through the middle with Willock out wide instead? Was really, really weird tbh. Honestly feel like Howe just did something different to keep them guessing ahead of the final really

Keep him away from set pieces.

This and keep him away from ever playing centrally. Totally ineffective at both.

This is going to sound incredibly harsh and I don’t think having self-confidence is a bad thing. Top level players clearly need it. But I feel like he has main character syndrome. The same way a lot of elite players who are the main man at their club do. But I don’t think his technical ability backs that up.

Wanting to be on every set piece, the way he comes across at times, demanding the ball and then fucking up the pass to link play. Which kept happening tonight.

His technique and passing are actually quite poor. He’s not Barnes levels of one dimensional. But I just think he is at his best playing fairly wide, changing between drifting infield or going down the line and generally getting up down the wing all game. Which was mainly what he did last season and he was probably our best and most consistent player.

I think/hope he played more central to help Wilson with the press and to cut off their passing lanes through the middle. As it didn’t make much sense otherwise. He should have been going at TAA on the regular.

He certainly worked his bollocks off. Which he almost always does.
