A few weeks after the transfer window closes. That's handy

I look forward to the day that all this nonsense is behind us (not sure if that will ever happen though)

Anyone read the Athletic article about Spurs? This stood out, "Spurs’ financials dove into the red in sync with the arrival of the Covid-19 pandemic, and while both the virus and other matters since have contributed to a half-decade of loss-making, the bulk of those deficits have been driven by a single line item: the accounting cost of depreciating the recently built Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (THS)."

I thought infrastructure had nothing to do with PSR?

Maybe they're just talking about their finances in general as a company.

It doesn’t, they still have to pay off the loans used to build the stadium out of their revenues however.

To try and put a positive spin on all this, in a number of ways I think I’m actually glad we’ve had these rules invented to slow us down.  My biggest worry about the takeover was that we’d lose our identity and turn into a soulless PSG type club where we’d quickly lose our connection with it and care less and less the better we did because it wasn’t “ours” anymore.

In reality, the ups and downs of the last 3 and a half years have been really, really fun and I don’t think it would have been as fun if we’d just signed 18 world class players and won the league (probably?) this year.

It really feels like we’re earning our success and we’re doing it with a squad/manager/staff who 100% deserve what they getting. As fans we’re probably as close and connected to the club as ever before, cheering on players we love, winning and losing WITH them. Embrace the fact that the Villa result hurt so much because it means you care.

We can’t realistically be accused of buying our trophy and any success we have in the future will again be earned, not given.  These rules are just one more “fuck you” Newcastle United need to overcome and we’re already well on the way to doing so.

Agree 100%. Hopefully we’ll see the death of the rules at some point and replaced with something worthy of the title but winning our first trophy in 70 years whilst achieving UCL once if not twice from the pits of relegation has made this last 3 year all the sweeter under restrictions specifically in place to stop us.

The depreciation of the stadium is a big number but it doesn't count against PSR.

The interest payments do count against PSR and they are pretty big (like £25m if I remember right), but most of the stadium is financed at interest rates we may never see again so overall they are in good shape.

Maybe not as transformative summer as we all had hoped , let’s hope we make champions league or it could be only one or two new faces at a push

From a PSR perspective, Newcastle are unlikely to be as pinched as a year ago but their headroom still looks limited, at least until the end of June. Once the 2025-26 accounting period rolls around, and the big loss of 2022-23 is gone from their calculation, they’ll have greater scope to spend domestically.

The relevant part suggests we will be quiet until the new financial year in July.

This is the part I didn’t understand in January (from the media). Most were saying we couldn’t spend in January which would enable us to take advantage of any clubs needing to sell in June. Similarly to how Brighton did with us last year with Minteh.

Yeah basically prior to the start of July the conditions from January remain. So essentially the window opening in June is a continuation of the January one as far as we are concerned.

With one key difference, buying in Jan puts half a year of wages and amortisation in the accounts, buying on June gives 1 month.

So selling in June has a much bigger impact on the year than for the buying club, any business we do in June should really be viewed as part of the July/August activity

Ahhh yes that's a great point

Was anyone expecting different?

Craig no Hope was peddling the narrative a while ago following the lack of Jan investment that keeping our funds could mean we could take advantage of clubs in a similar need to sell position we were in the summer prior before that end of June deadline. Not sure if I read any media saying similar.
