Say this 4-3-3 v2.0 is the new formation - where does Miley fit? I can’t but think his role in this set up is on the left of the 3 - to compete with J7 and Willock

Thats why I think it’s imperative our next midfielder signing be an alternative on the other side 6-8 hybrid  (With Miley maturing in a few years to play all 3 potentially)

Depends on his defensive / danger reading ability, but I do feel if he’s naturally got that which can be tapped into, then the deep CM where everything goes through him is his long term position for club and country.

Very comfortable receiving ball with his back to play which is key in that role. But at his age, he’s got plenty of time to grow into that with his technical ability.

I don’t think he’ll ever have the defensive awareness to do that. When I watch him it’s the glaring weakness in his game.

Looks like a 10 to me.

Odd. I wouldn't say he's weaker defensively than offensively. Looks like a pretty well rounded central midfield player to me. Seeing as he's turning into something of a beast physically he should be able to do the Joelinton role pretty well going forward. Also I don't think he's unsuited to doing it on the right either (Bruno's current position).

Edit: I went and did a bit of youtube scouting to see if I somehow misremembered. Majority of his highlights are defensive, i.e. taking the ball off an opponent and either driving forward or playing an offensive pass:

I believe he is the hybrid, could play either the Tonali or Bruno role. I think initially see him playing more of the Bruno role until Howe is sure he knows the posititioning for the DM role.

If we sell either of Willock or Longstaff we'll need to replace them with someone who can play a similar role, unless there's someone in the under 23s lined up to step in as cover.

100s of academy players displaying this kind of ability eh, I really don't think so. Baffles me the people seemingly blind to his capabilities already

And I'm staggered at what you are seeing.  I really really hope you are right in your assumption that he is a quality player.

I just haven't seen anything at all that has made me say "wow".

yeah, well it's all about opinions, and I'm equally staggered at yours. I think you'll find yourself in a rather small minority in the fanbase, nearly everyone I know is pretty excited by this kid. We shall see.

Ball retention is elite, that was evident the day he came into the team tbh. Passing is quality too. He just lacked positional awareness and shape but that will come.

Unfortunately he needs a bit more time in the team and a YouTube compilation before anyone will think he's any good. He's better than either Longstaff at that age, but he's got a long way to go.

That's a pretty impressive compilation, especially as most of it was as a 17 year old and against top class, and even world class, opponents.

The probable reason some still aren't wowed by the kid is that he hasn't really played for the first team with the "shackles" off yet.

With our current midfield he is going to have to be patient but when the shackles do come off his real capabilities will become evident.
