Singing Section at SJP - Poll

219 members have voted

  1. 1. Would you want a large singing/standing section at St James' Park?

    • Yes. I'm an existing season ticket holder and I would want to be a part of it

    • Yes. I'm an existing season ticket holder but wouldn't want to be part of it, but I would move to a seat somewhere else if the singing section was to be where I currently sit....as long as I was happy with the new seat.

    • No. The atmosphere is fine as it is.

    • No. The atmosphere needs to improve but this isn't the answer.

    • Yes. I'm just a member at the moment but would want one in the singing section.

    • Yes. I'm just a member at the moment but would want a season ticket in a non-singing section. But a singing section needs to happen to let people who want to sing be together

I noticed how young and up for it the Boro crowd looked on the telly, not surprised to hear it was good in the ground

Big problem Boro have is Pigbag. That dogshit tune needs a one way ticket to the Mariana Trench

And I'd rather have a ground full of OAP's sitting on their hands than play music after a goal

And they did that awful flashing lights thing too

The support debate will run and run forever now unfortunately.

Social media mainly to blame with false accounts many from those who feel pushed out now the club is enforcing T&Cs trying to pick fault and run it down and magnify anything that suits their narrative.

There is also the changing in social behaviour as time goes on etc not as conducive to “limbs” or “singing” etc. Same as at a music gig these days.

However what support is best for the team/individual players? Is it song after song? Or just cheering and urging the team on more effective? In which case not a lot has changed.

I think some fans mistake them having a good time singing as great support when it could be argued it’s not as effective as we’ve thought compared to just cheering.

Either way silence is never the answer. Yesterday I’d argue there was plenty of support but mainly of the later type.

Watch the match-cam and judge for yourselves if our end was quiet…

It'll be best part of 20 years since I was last there. Couldn't believe they still play it

Another correlation I've worked out is that the easier it is to get tickets, the easier it is to get a good atmosphere going. I bought 4 prime seats altogether in a prime location on general sale and without any purchase history. It enables likeminded people to group together much easier.

It's one of the arguments for a new stadium for me. I think we're gonna have to accept there's gonna be 40,000+ wasting seats if we get successful - no fixing it - so our best hope is having another 30,000+ spare for more traditional supporters.

Yep this. Ticket availabilty is 1000% what create or kills atmosphere, I remember back in day for uefa cup early rounds loads of young lads would buy tickets for Strawberry corner, as it was no problem to get tickets, then that progressed into Level 7 aa season ticket holders.

The only way you can get fans together is moving fans, sadly we have an aging support who kick up a fuss.

If we could get the club to make seat moves happen it would be a great success.

Was at Boro v Chelsea last night and sadly have to report that their atmosphere absolutely pisses all over ours, if I was to compare that to our Semi Final last year.

Firstly their DJ does a great job in working up the crowd. It was already full 15 mins before kick off so he turned the music off and just let the crowd sing and it was the best build up to a match I can remember in years.

We were in the West Stand, equivalent to the Milburn at SJP, and people were bouncing up and down in there! Certainly wouldn't happen at SJP. Their main singing end was to our right in the South Stand. It's clear that they have an organised Ultras group in there and there's even a podium for the drummer to stand in  What I will say is that they never stopped all night. A full end, 5 or 6k all stood for the entire match and song after song. The North Stand opposite, although mainly seated except towards the back, was also very loud and both the East and West Stand regularly joined in. Made for a really noisy experience!

One thing I did notice was how different the demographic is between their fanbase and ours. In their main singing end it appeared to be all teenagers and lads in their 20s and 30s. Where were we it was more people in their 30s/40s but still loads of kids.. You can probably add 20 years onto that if you're talking about the SJP crowd.

Was nice, as a neutral, to be part of such a young, enthusiastic, vibrant support though although came away slightly envious I'll be honest.

They might get sanctioned for an entire Stand singing "You're just a town full of rent boys" at the Chelsea fans however. That was very loud and will certainly have been picked up!

I think last night was a bit of an exception. Generally, aside from the 'ultras' and the fucking drum, the atmosphere is poor, not helped by large numbers of empty seats. The atmosphere against Villa at the weekend was shit.

I was just comparing it to our Semi Final last year mate as that's pretty much like for like, except our home game was the 2nd leg.

It was a strange night the semi-final last year. I don't know if fans just expected to go through or what but it was really flat. It happens now and again, same for Dortmund this year.

Appreciate that it was a comparable fixture but you are comparing Boro at their best vs us at our worst. Not making any excuses for us BTW, it was shit.

That was my first visit there in almost 20 years so can't comment if that was at their best or not, although I very much doubt it's like that every week in the Championship against the likes of Rotherham! What I do know is that last year's Semi Final certainly wasnt us at our worst either, it just wasn't very good, but we've been much worse than that this season. It was noticeable that Boro have a much younger, excitable and vibrant crowd than we do which in turn contributes towards atmosphere.

Didnt sound anything out of the ordinary on the telly like

Then again when I watched the PSG game back it didn't sound that good

Yet when I walked out the stadium I thought it was the best atmosphere I've been in at SJP

The age and make up of our crowd is the biggest problem, where losing a generation of young lads growing up with a culture of going to the match together.

We desperately need to get the youngins back in and that doesn’t mean parents taking their young kids, it’s the lads in their early 20’s we need, being able to stand together, start songs, get pissed and goad the away fans.

The place is like a fucking morgue and it’s even creeping into the away support now. SJP is now a sanitised soulless experience and I can’t see that changing without a significant change to ticketing and stadium layout.

boro have a smaller stadium with better acoustics also.

This reminds me. At the derby last week there was a bit back and forth chanting pre game when the SOL was just filling up as players warmed up and it was notable in their corner next to us how little of them it took to make a sound. The acoustics at SOL definitely better than SJP. Another reason I’d favour a new ground.

No. That's when the team need the fans to get behind them.

I would love to know where all the people that complain about critique the atmosphere where during the Ashley years.

Could have done with you back then.

Looking at profile active dates I’ll assume there all here because of the new owners.

Hi mate, not sure if you’re referring to me but I was a season ticket holder during the Ashley years. I had my season ticket for 15 years and had 145 away loyalty points (of which I actually went to pretty much all of those games).

I lost my season ticket in 2019 because my wife was taken into hospital for a month and was diagnosed with PSC (the same condition that Kieron Dyer has) and now requires a liver transplant. She also went completely deaf and lost all of her balance, meaning we had a three month rehabilitation where she had to learn to walk again.

I missed a season ticket payment due to my mind being elsewhere and the club took that as me not wanting to keep my season ticket and took away my loyalty points, so I lost the lot.

I haven’t been able to get a season ticket back since.

I was banned off this forum between 2008(ish) and 2024 because someone who was banned guessed my password and started posting as me. Thankfully

I’ve been allowed back recently as I really enjoy this place.

Is that sufficient enough reason?

Firstly I’m really sorry to hear about your wife’s struggles with illness and I hope she can get the required medical help she needs. Sending positive vibes to the pair of you.

Secondly rather shite from the club to do that to you without any form of communication, but we both expect that from Ashley.

I had gave my season ticket up in 2015, as  left the Area for work and couldn’t stomach giving Ashley my money anymore especially as the travelling would have added extra costs and time I just didn’t have and like you I doubt I will every get a season ticket again.

My comment was by no way aimed directly at anybody, just a generalisation of this thread and the people that complain about the lack of atmosphere and lack of noise from the crowd, all the while watching it on TV which never really represents the stadium.

As a fan in the stadium it difficult to be positive and create an atmosphere when you can clearly see how things are going on the pitch, but that never stops people being critical of the supporters who are luckily enough to get a  ticket.

For the most part I though we tried our best in the stands tonight all things considered.

I was in the east stand at the half way line and the atmosphere was good from there for the most part. Various areas of the ground singing, with the Leazes the most vocal I’ve heard in a long time. It has been poor on occasions, but I think we are sometimes too critical of our atmosphere sometimes, particularly when you hear the silence at other grounds with Anfield and the Etihad to name a couple. Which premier league ground has a consistently better atmosphere than ours?
