20-ish minutes in the crowd picked up the energy and atmosphere and all of a sudden the team up the tempo and we're swarming them. I'll never buy into the idea that what the crowd is doing has no impact on what happens on the pitch.

Apart from that 20-minute period in the first half it was pretty quiet. Could definitely have done with a bit more defiance and verbal encouragement towards the end.

Was sat in Level 7 more or less on the halfway line in row N today. Thought it was absolutely diabolical. If the staunch season ticket holders so desperate to stay put wanted to show the chairman what we'd all be missing if we moved, then they fluffed their audition miserably.

Once upon a time scoring 4 goals in an 11 minute spell, especially against the 3rd top team would have had the place absolutely bouncing. Not today it didn't. From up where I was sat you get a good perspective of the place. The SE Corner try. Can't knock them. There's probably 1k in there giving it their all. The NE Corner (between Leazes and East stand) gave 1 rousing chant of Eddie Howes black and white army. The Leazes End sang twice (after the 2nd and 3rd goals) and that was it. Level 7 must be the most soulless place anywhere in England to watch a game of football. Everyone sat arms folded contributing absolutely nothing. 50/50 decisions aren't appealed anymore. Bad refereeing calls not challenged. It's like nobody gives a toss.

Team was shite 2nd half. Probably needed the crowd to help them through but nothing at all coming back from the stands. Bruno tried on a couple of occasions to get people going but he was pissing in the wind today.

A new stadium can't come soon enough if it means a bit of a refresh. Hopefully some of the miserable bastards piss off and don't darken the new place.

Well Done Clapping GIF by MOODMAN

Starting with the “anywhere but shopping with the wife” crowd that stink out the ground for two hours whilst their missus is in Eldon Square.

I was sat in the corner today, first time in there. Was impressed with the atmosphere in there felt like an old school away game sang pretty much throughout. Such a different experience in there like absolutely loved it. If only that atmosphere travelled round the ground a bit more we would be fine. On the way home now voice hoarse and 3 points in the bag. What a day!

unfortunately I think the game has moved on - as shit as it was today there are exceptions - Arsenal in the cup. I think a new ground brings more silos more day trippers .. etc

People leaving at 4-2 and 4-3 should get their season ticket revoked. I'm all for a new stadium so long as the club listens to fans and gets like-minded fans together in the stadium.  This is our chance to create the Gallowgate Wall.

Yep. I think SJP is one of the worst grounds for nervousness transcending to the players too. Can feel it around the 60th minute mark nearly every time we're leading.

The early leavers for half time and full time massively doesn't help, I seriously can't get obsession of leaving at 35 to get a pint.

Bloke Infront of me calling few forest fans heading to exit as 4th went in, he then left at 84 mins....

I know this is a rhetorical question, and I entirely agree with your wider point, but it's worth noting that the last train south avoiding rail replacement buses left at 4pm and I know of at least 2 silly sods/daft c***s that had booked on that. They'll have had to leave before the end after the injury time in 1st half.

I wouldn't do it myself mind (for this exact reason!) Would have killed me to be in a position where I had to leave a game like that early.

Got asked to stop clapping at 10 min cos it was hurting his ears.

Last two games have made me think about fucking off going to games.

Not paying 60 quid to hear people moan all fucking game or hear some guy nearly have a heart attack because we passed the ball back.

Fans were on the players back all game.  Spent most game trying not to tell them to shut the fuck because they are a fucking idiots.

Pints in the Percy went up by 10p after full time.

we can round the houses on this but imho our supporters are still good but :

- people don’t sit with their mates

-our average age is like 50+

- younguns / radgeees priced out - support is now more great park / low fell / Jesmond / Tynemouth than wallsend , Byker , Benwell

- all seater stadia

Genuinely can't believe this. Is it a regular person you sit near?

It's the same old story. I was there yesterday, plenty of people want to sing but are too spaced out. The crowd definitely helped the team go 4-1 up like. Some good encouragement for that spell.

Arrived in town from the metro, the journey in felt subdued and little buzz.  Normally there's a lot of chatter and a feel for the game on the metro but it just wasnt there.  Arrived and moment and felt the city centre also felt a bit flat, the walk up to the ground was a bit crap as well.

The game itself, everyone picked up eventually but the first 15 / 20 mins were a bit flat.

Was better than I expected tbh but I'm in the corner so got no idea what the rest of the place was like as you can always hear chants.   I get that they could have used a better atmosphere in the 2nd half, but fuck me it was hard not to be nervous the way we were playing.

Anyone else notice the bloke near the Gallowgate corner, sits in front of the walkway, spends nearly every game with his back to the pitch cupping his ear and shrugging to SE corner  can see him shouting at people across the walkway presumably for not singing constantly, very ironic considering he spends his time whinging to other fans for not singing, whilst not singing himself or even watching the game.

Always gives me a giggle.

Agreed. I'd like to see one massive fuckoff end of safe standing, pay on turnstile only. Sure, have ID, membership required so idiots can be banned, but bring back the times of being able to just rock up and see a game if you want to enough. And make it affordable, cheap even.

Pros:

  • No more pockets of singers dotted all over. They can gather together in the same area every week.
  • Kids could, if they really wanted to, see a game. With their mates. A new generation of fans, who would one day graduate to more expensive seats, could be nurtured.
  • The club can truly be part of the community, with nobody excluded.
  • Atmosphere would undoubtedly be better, in fact it would be off the charts.
  • Early attendance would be pretty much essential, meaning greater revenue inside the ground, so increased matchday revenue on that front.

Cons (and mitigations):

  • Less revenue. OK, yeah on paper, but what value would the stadium with the greatest atmosphere in the world bring to the club, as we look to increase our presence on the global stage?
  • Turnstile carnage. Definitely scope for his, but with modern technology surely this would easily be countered. I'm picturing some sort of point where you'd NFC your phone to confirm & pay, and then head off to the Stack or wherever to await a notification of which timeslot/turnstile to enter etc.
  • Erm.. sure there are more, but my positive mindset can't think of any. Sure someone will be along shortly to piss on my chips.

Basically it would be a modern day corner/scoreboard type of setup. But stick a roof on to amplify the noise and the place would be rocking.

Just egotistically quoting myself from the SJP thread. I kind of get the 'there's no point, it will never happen' mentality. But If we do get a new stadium I'd still like to see supporters groups push all out for something like this.

Yes it's really unlikely, and no, nobody else is doing it. But why not try to harness the enormous and almost unique advantage that we have available to us, instead of diluting and neutering it like we currently do?

I kinda admire your commitment to this, but it is utterly pointless expecting a major PL club revert back to a situation where people are sleeping outside the stadium to queue up to get in.

For a start I very much doubt the local SAG (or whoever the fuck does all the safety box ticking these days) would allow it.

The club would have to policing the

queue for however long, so that’s hardly something they’d be keen on.

Having said that, maybe a new stadium would allow something of this ilk but on a much, much smaller scale to what you’ve outlined.

I'm pretty sure with some thought and the miracles of modern technology it would be possible to achieve much the same thing without necessarily being physically present. I'd already made a  loose suggestion, I'm sure there are better ones.  Have some optimism and think outside the box :coolsmiley:

TBH though, and discarding the idea of pay 'at the gate', even just getting rid of specific seats being allocated would be a start. Turn up in groups and gather together in your groups. That in itself would be a huge step forwards.
