LordJake
Was in the Leazes east corner today and it wasn’t too bad, at least I didn’t feel like a social pariah for joining in. Mind you, the bloke next to me spent most of the first half reading the programme and on his phone

Clearly today didn’t suit a lot of them socially and will be the same again midweek. Place is like a morgue and we’ve got no supporter culture in the stands whatsoever. I got no extra buzz out of attending that today instead of watching on tv.

When the game becomes secondary to talking about your car and affluence, you should be grassed up and removed. Similar the old fogeys, outed and made to watch it home where you can enjoy the silence. Sounded absolutely honking. Unless they've started using new mics for TV all I could hear for most of the match was Bruno shouting instructions. OpenC
I was passing by at about 2, couldn't believe the number of picture perfect wives and kids going in these days. I have nothing against picture perfect wives and kids, I've got one of each living here, but I just can't imagine they were making a lot of noise like. There has to be a way to stop people like that from wanting to go. Fucking off the wank DJ with his cosy tunes would be a start maybe

Jonas
We were throwing paper aeroplanes on the pitch against these 20years ago it was that boring and the atmosphere that dead. Just as long as were not pretending otherwise, its a fair cop.
bobbydazzla
Give the people who want to sing, shout and support dedicated areas and make those areas the majority of the stadium. The yappers and grumpy cunts who go because it’s their way of socialising and they have minimal interest in the football, tell them they can move out of the new noisy areas to other parts of the ground, or they can give up their tickets. Who gives a fuck if they complain about it, they’re currently adding nothing by being in the ground anyway so fuck them. The problem is more a failure to seat like-minded supporters together and improving accessibility for younger lads. The fact a new stadium seems unlikely now suggests these problems will only get worse as the average age of attendees increases year upon year. PCW1983
There’s definitely a shift in the socio-economic background of fans at SJP, this has certainly accelerated post take over too. I’m not implying this means these people are lesser fans or anything like that but I think that there’s much more reserved fans going to the match now and it creates a kind of herd mentality, add in the number of kids multiplied by swearing and the general distain for it amongst parent/child groups it creates some strange dynamics in the ground. I go with one of the bairns in the Gallowgate and my match days look very different now compared to pre kids, I very rarely get out for pre match drinks it’s now getting something to eat with the bairn, I get to the ground earlier, still sing, wave flags etc (the kids love it) but I do try not to swear and what not, I know I’m not as vocal as a match as what I was 10 years ago that’s for certain. Personally, I like the idea of the singing section etc but I also think it has the potential to create an us and them mentality in the ground, I think there’s already a problem with that in the supporter base, loads of examples in this thread alone…ultimately everyone supports the team in a different way and not everyone will want to sing, shout and scream, just as I don’t want my 6 year old to hear some prick calling Bruno a cunt for a misplaced pass…but we all have to accommodate each other’s nuisances… Dont really know where I’m going with this now, but I think there’s a lot of bitterness (understandable) from those who can’t get a season ticket or regular tickets and also a lot of status season ticket holders too…neither are healthy. AyeDubbleYoo
Might be because I was east stand away from the corner, but don’t think I’ve ever heard a quieter game. Whitley mag
It’s really odd it’s not even just a lack of singing. It’s general emotion like when we go on the attack there’s no roar anymore. It seems people just go for the sake of it, I have no idea what enjoyment they’re getting out of it due to their lack of reaction to anything happening on the pitch. People enjoy football in different ways but, if you’re not getting caught up in any emotion of being there, surely you may as well just watch it on the tv. Big River
you could hear Eddie shouting from the back of the Gallowgate just a weird day overall, town was absolutely dead, and you could hear a pin drop walking out of the stadium at the end.
