Absolutely. Probably why they haven't stressed out doing it asap as it'll be something they have to do, but it's nothing that will change anything (unless he starts betting again that is) in practical terms.

If done for a positive outcome I don’t think it’s pointless. 
 

if he broke the rules while under FA jurisdiction then they must investigate to send a clear message it won’t be tolerated.

 

where the outcome has to be positive is not destroying the guys career or making him more likely to relapse or ruin his life with a new non consecutive ban.

 

what they should be doing is using him as an example to existing and upcoming players. You break the rules and we will come down on you. BUT if you have a problem with gambling and if you are betting on games stop. Come forward and tell us, we can work with you to get help and support. Come to us and you get help and support rather than harsh punishments.

 

the problem is the same as many addictions, if the law is punishment you’ve criminalised addition, which I know many in here dont believe is an illness. But punishing and driving illness and problems further underground doesn’t help.

 

It 100 percent needs investigating, the outcome is the important bit and what message the FA end up sending out.

I was at the ground and it just felt he wanted to get his (deserved) ovation but the ref just wanted to sub him off really quickly. Given it was 5–1 at the time it felt really harsh.

I find it a bit ironic, apart from the potential for match fixing/insider knowledge angles, how an industry can be so piffy about gambling when it takes so much money itself from the "hobby"

Pretty massive ‘apart from’ there. The integrity of the sport means clearly players can’t bet on it and especially can’t bet on their own games

I see Groundhog's point. The FA and Premier League will bend over backwards to touch upon mental health, racism, sexism, addiction etc in often the most cosmetic ways.

 

Gambling addiction though? We'll treat that with a ban, but first let's hear from our sponsors...tons of betting companies...who we're banning as front of shirt sponsors soon because of the addictive and negative mental impact it has on people...who we'll treat with a ban if those people are players, even if they're addicted.

 

There's very little joined up thinking.

I work an gambling. You gamble to try and win money, but they dont need that. But the thrill is what hooks you. Hopefully he can overcome the addiction, it is now affecting his life in a very negative way.

I work in gambling too. You should look up the Epic Foundation - company run by former addicts. People in elite sport, the forces, high pressured city jobs have a larger predisposition to harmful gambling behaviours. It’s thought this is in part due to replicating the highs they face in their professions away from work.

Crucially, it looks like he admitted this additional period of betting at the time of the investigation last year. 

 

I assume that the FA have delayed any charge so that they could be assured that Tonali had not done any further betting after October.

If anything, that just gives more substance to the fact it’s an addiction rather than some form of sneaky insider trading stuff. An addiction throws logical behaviour out the window

The FA have no gambling sponsors though and they have little to no power to stop what clubs can display on their shirts outside of the FA cup or to stop it.  This is why their's been a whole discussion over the last years around a regulator around football because of how little regulation etc and power the FA has.  I agree it's hypocritical with how football has sold itself to gambling companies etc.  

Btw, that agreement to ban shirt sponsors on front of shirts was because of the government threatening to put laws in around it.

 

However in this instance they are just following their rule book which they have to.

I don't think he knew he was being investigated? Looking at the dates, he got pulled from training with Italy mid-October which is when the FA charge runs to. Seems like they were investigating covertly, brought him in to talk about it and that's when he stopped.
