Ahh, you wanted him in for Burn last season, but now he's come in at left back you want to see him in midfield. Got it.

Yeh this is in response to a League Cup game and trying different approaches. I also suggested Sandro at 6 there but I admit - I didn't think it would work... but I wanted to see it given a go. Eddie tried Sandro at 6 in the next league cup game and that was the start of our renaissance - so I guess there was value in my comment :)

Likewise with Hall, he's such a brilliant player in low-stakes games i'd like to see him in midfield. Early League Cup or FA Cup games against lower league opposition are an opportunity to experiment. But I'm not suggesting we bring Targett at LB and Hall to CM and remove Joelinton going forward.

Best to take my posts in good faith rather than trying to find silly holes. Look at the context.

I've said similar re Hall moving further forward a bit in a low risk game, as much to satisfy my own curiosity as anything else. He seems to have the skill set and we have tried him in midfield a couple of times but before he settled up here.

Think he got 15 minutes against Man U at 6 before Targett got injured in a league cup game. Or maybe it was the other way around.

Definitely Man City. From interviews it sounds like he himself was struggling to accept his future wasn't as a midfielder around this time.

As much as I enjoy watching him play now, I'm already looking forward to his Pirlo phase in ~10 years time when he doesn't have to run anymore because he just knows where the ball will end up, and where his teammates will make runs.

Tonali looked emotional when he sprinted over to the fans after making it 3-1 but said he got good vibrations from the 3,000 strong Toon Army right from the word go.

Tonali said: "When we went out for the warm-up at Southampton, it was actually like being at St James' Park. This is important for us."

We may actually have the best midfield of any premier league club on current form

Tonali could just play as a holding midfielder with ease but his attributes get more from those around him. He seems to have it all and he's adding goals now.

Easily - I thought Bruno was the best CM I'd seen at NUFc and then up pops along Sandro!

Technically Joelinton is not really a top level midfielder, but you could argue his wrecking ball physicality more than makes up for it. Teams must hate playing against him.

It’s all about the blend. Not many better midfield trios around. When they’re all ticking (and long may it continue) certainly the best I have seen for us.

I've been mulling this over for some time now, but I'm pretty sure Sandro is going down as my favorite Newcastle player ever. We've just not had a player like him for as long as I can think. When younger I always favoured attacking players like Cole, Beardsley, Ginola etc but this guy is just pure class from deep in midfield. Just in awe at how he goes through a game.

He's Gattuso with technique and I don't think that's being hyperbolic.  Over the last few months watching him perform there's been many a moment where I've said inwardly "how the fuck does this guy play for us?"
