I remember when a few posters on here were getting at some of us who questioned Longstaff being preferred to him...

Right before Tonali got his suspension and Longstaff objectively played better than him you mean? Weird that.

Tbf, I don’t think anyone thought that Longstaff was a better, or close to being a better player, than Tonali. They just pointed out that the team seemed to function better with Longstaff in it.

It was the positional change that made all the difference. He’s now not playing in Longstaff’s ’position’, even if he has taken his place in the team.

Pure revisionism, the team was doing well and Longstaff was graded by that & not his individual performances.

A good Longstaff game/action would be an average Tonali/Bruno game/action, that was true then as it is now.

He just had the hometown bias + playing with an in form team working for him.

Hometown bias is a funny thing.

Depending which way someone’s arguing they’re convinced it goes a certain way. Yet someone arguing against that will be convinced it goes the other way.

Anyway, it’s not revisionism to say that maybe bar his debut against Villa, Tonali’s performances in the ‘eight’, for want of a better word, were nowhere near the majestic level he’s shown since dropping further back. And the team has benefited accordingly.

That after 90+ minutes of running the entire midfield and scoring a great goal to boot. Mount had only been on the pitch about 10 minutes and just couldn't be arsed to try and keep up with him. Elite DM.

To be fair Mount was probably more concerned with his body not tearing apart and bits dropping off than keeping up with our thoroughbred Italian Stallion. Like putting a Blackpool Pleasure Beach donkey up against a Grand National winner.

I know injuries have hit him but it was easy to forget he even came on yesterday, just offers nothing at all. No clue what he's even good at anymore. Looks sick of his life when I see him.

The thing is he's always been like that. He never offered anything to Chelsea or England except goals. It was the similarity to Lampard in that regard that led to the delusion he was actually a good footballer.

Our hit rate with our relatively few transfers is unbelievable. What a player he has become.

I think some of you may be right - his ban and how he was treated has instilled at strong sense of loyalty and work ethic, never mind help rapidly break down any language barriers.

Should probably have worded my response differently to say that the team was objectively functioning better with Longstaff in his familiar role than Tonali who was obviously struggling to figure it out.
