Tbf, I don’t think anyone thought that Longstaff was a better, or close to being a better player, than Tonali. They just pointed out that the team seemed to function better with Longstaff in it. It was the positional change that made all the difference. He’s now not playing in Longstaff’s ’position’, even if he has taken his place in the team. Weird that. Pure revisionism, the team was doing well and Longstaff was graded by that & not his individual performances. A good Longstaff game/action would be an average Tonali/Bruno game/action, that was true then as it is now. He just had the hometown bias + playing with an in form team working for him. AyeDubbleYoo Posted yesterday at 13:27 Share Posted yesterday at 13:27 Nobody will ever convince me that it wasn’t a coincidence that we were playing better with Longstaff.

Hometown bias is a funny thing. Depending which way someone’s arguing they’re convinced it goes a certain way. Yet someone arguing against that will be convinced it goes the other way. Anyway, it’s not revisionism to say that maybe bar his debut against Villa, Tonali’s performances in the ‘eight’, for want of a better word, were nowhere near the majestic level he’s shown since dropping further back. And the team has benefited accordingly.

To be fair Mount was probably more concerned with his body not tearing apart and bits dropping off than keeping up with our thoroughbred Italian Stallion. Like putting a Blackpool Pleasure Beach donkey up against a Grand National winner.

No clue what he's even good at anymore. Looks sick of his life when I see him.

It was the similarity to Lampard in that regard that led to the delusion he was actually a good footballer.

Turnbull2000 Posted yesterday at 13:58 Share Posted yesterday at 13:58 Our hit rate with our relatively few transfers is unbelievable. What a player he has become. I think some of you may be right - his ban and how he was treated has instilled at strong sense of loyalty and work ethic, never mind help rapidly break down any language barriers. andycap Posted yesterday at 13:58 Share Posted yesterday at 13:58 He'd walk into everybodies team in this league now. World class player him and Isak. Who'd of thought newcastle with two worldies on the books.

Should probably have worded my response differently to say that the team was objectively functioning better with Longstaff in his familiar role than Tonali who was obviously struggling to figure it out.
