No matter what happens this month and how many players we miss out on. I'm blaming Paul Mitchell.

He'll be clearing his desk tomorrow

I blame Twitter and the constant need for 24/7 news. "Journalists" making up nonsense stories to drive up engagement is just grim.

Twitter is just the vehicle, it's not the reason for the destination of travel. It's general public / twitter users that are the problem.

Let’s be real, it’s less about journalism and more about traffic now. Sports media runs on ad revenue, and that means clicks are king. Outlets make more money by pumping out constant content like hot takes, sensational headlines and shallow analysis because that’s what drives engagement.

Depth and quality don’t pay nearly as well as outrage and volume so why spend time on thoughtful reporting when you can churn out 5 quota-filling guff pieces before lunch and kick your feet up while ad dollars roll in.

That we haven’t.

It's early doors. I'd love us to get business done early, like Liverpool have, but I think we'll see the market move properly in July

Re hash the same wording and throw in a sprinkle of make believe and you can get a week or two out of the same bollox. Just voids to fill, especially when there is no football on.

Think they work from a very small pool of targets and share your cynicism.

Where not nimble in the market and the narrative will change shortly to a couple of quality additions, tin hat on but I predict already we’ll start next season massively under equipped for the season ahead.

I dont understand the constant negativity around our transfers. Our transfer record has been very good and our results on the pitch fantastic.

I'll bet you that we sign more than 2 good players.

Wasn't last summer supposed to be the worst window ever? We literally went on to win a cup and qualify for the CL. I think we'll be cush with only a couple of quality additions this time round [emoji38]

Yep, but does feel that this season gone it was a case of drain out all the last of we could from this squad. Needs some serious fresh faces, talking 4/5 strong faces to give us a kick because some will be drained.

I do feel like we need 4 minimum but we could easily do two in the last couple of days of the window.

The issue is a simple one, we are losing out to players because clubs with more financial clout are blowing us out the water.

There's 2 major international tournaments that have been going on, which means many transfers are on a standstill. You've got footballers and their families on holidays and you have the PSR deadline which can affect other clubs movement, which has a ripple effect.

Just to add some positivity, there's been loads of players we've missed out on the past, who've ended up tanking when going elsewhere, Mount, Maddison, Lingard, Coutinho and so on.

We will sign Trafford in the next fortnight, we will have someone else on their way soon after, that sets us up to attack the rest of the window.

Exactly this.

As long as the gullible & needy keep clicking and sharing the lies, then journo’s will keep pumping out the lies

Just ignore the Twatter and the clickbait articles. Don’t click on them

Because when you do, you’re simply feeding the beast and the cycle continues

Relax, don't do it
When you want to click

While journalists do play a role, I don't believe they're entirely at fault here.

Like it's totally fair to call out some of the shit that they put out; a lot of it is half-baked, rushed, or clearly meant to stir up drama. But it's also worth remembering that a lot of these guys are just trying to do their jobs in a system that pretty much forces this kind of content.

The system needs to change

I agree tbh, was being slightly facetious, but I really do think we are a little OTT with our criticism and how much we clamour for any sort of rumour

I think there's a lot of anxiety bred from what's happened in the previous three windows. In reality, getting to July 1 this time without a signing and missing out on the odd target is hardly anything to stress over. Again this assumes Trafford isn't waiting in the wings.

This is spot on. This is entirely because of our lack of activity over the past 2 seasons.

We've clearly got the money and the desire to improve. We need players in but they must be investments for the medium term and just throwing money at it quickly so they get an extra weeks pre season with us is mental... even if its desirable.

While it will be great to get Trafford through the door, signing a really top quality midfielder or forward is always the one where competition is really intense, and harder to nail down. These are the players where the skillset is more rare and you get more clubs chasing the same players. We'll either have to be more creative and look for promise rather than the ready made options, or just pay more than our rivals.

Yeah and it's understandable, to a degree. However, it's been pointed out time and time again why we may not have signed anyone yet, but those seemingly valid reasons are repeatedly glossed over.

Well sign Trafford, a CB and two players further forward in this window.

Im not so fussed on time, although early will be better. Im not too fussed on price because its clear the club have learned their lesson on the future PSR consequences.

As for the quality, well, we have to wait.

I’m not negative about it.  But we are likely looking at losing out on 4 of our main targets by the start of July. That is pretty shitty.

Should Pedro end up going to Chelsea it’ll be interesting to see how we pivot and whether someone like Xavi Simons becomes a more realistic option now.

We’ve been linked with Simons in both 2023 and 2024, so he’s clearly someone the club has followed closely. Young, technical, versatile, and able to play that link role between midfield and attack that Pedro seemed targeted for.

He’s not a direct striker option, but he ticks a lot of the same boxes: comfortable as a 10, wide forward, or drifting centrally. High work rate, great in transition, and very much the type Howe could develop into something special.

What Pedro offered that Simons doesn’t is cover for Isak. And with clear budget constraints, if we can’t stretch to both an attacking mid and a striker, then the right-sided forward we bring in might need to be able to cover centrally, even if that’s not their ideal role. That could limit our options unless a smart deal emerges.

If we do go for someone like Simons and a specialist wide player, then we might still need to roll the dice on a low-cost or free striker.  Forum favourite DCL just entered the chat…😬
