In an ideal world, we'd have shifted big joe already or he'd be packing his house up now the seasons done but I just don't see that happening this year.

Leave Big Joe for this season - but defo sell him next season (with Barnes)

On top of this we need to get a good loan for Finneran - there is potential for him to be in our squad for 27/28 - probably our best prospect to break through next

It’s just sensible squad build - something we should now implement given that our footballing structure looks a lot healthier (DoF, Tech Dir etc) and decisions like these are better made with long term views in mind

I think the weaknesses in that area show up even more in the 4231 tbh.

 

The fact Willock is playing when Tonali is out is like a big fkn no no, I know Miley is hurt but still it's a very obvious hole that needs filling.

It’s been obvious for a while mind, and I’m sure Howe has previously said he doesn’t like playing with one. That’s why I find the links encouraging, although they could be meaningless.

I understood his hesitation when Tonali at the base was working, but there's enough at this point that it needs changing.

Just occurred to me, if we could pick him up for 15-25, Angel Gomes as a squad player/6 in games we expect possession. He keeps things ticking over very well. Was reminded seeing Tuchel pick Hendersona nd Rice, and knowing Rice will play 6 which he cannot play, at least not in a slow tempo careful system and its been proven time and again.

I don’t think Howe is interested in that type of midfielder.

Only issue with this is that we wouldn't be maximising transfer fee when players have 1 year left generally its 25-30% lower fee than when there's two years left.

I mean if there is scope to sell him this summer - look at it - but at the same time we need to sell next summer too - Joe and Barnes are the obvious too

After head coach Eddie Howe made a public warning that United must hit the ground running this summer, he went away for a short break after Sunday's defeat at Fulham, safe in the knowledge that an important gathering of the club's transfer team had already been around the table to discuss new signings.

 

Chronicle Live understands that sporting director Ross Wilson took the lead in the meeting and key figures such as head of recruitment Steve Nickson, Senior Football Executive Andy Howe and the club's senior scouts were all in place.

 

The meeting is understood to have taken place on Tyneside last week, just days before the final day defeat to Fulham, with Toon boss Howe delegating the task of whittling down the short-list to former Rangers supremo Wilson.

 

Newcastle's talent spotters from across Europe also jetted in to discuss targets as Newcastle finalised their short-list. It is expected that head coach Howe wants a right-back, centre-midfielder, winger and goalkeeper as primary targets, but improving the squad overall is the main aim for the Magpies this summer.

 

The ex-AFC Bournemouth chief will not be able to lean into any extra funding anticipated from Europe this summer, and the reality is Newcastle have to sell to buy. There were two budget pots discussed at Newcastle, with CEO David Hopkinson saying in March: "We have two directions of planning. Two scenarios with a multitude of strategies that follow either scenario."

Why is Howe ‘delegating’ to Wilson. Isn’t that Wilson’s job? Sort of like saying Tindall delegated the team selection to Eddie Howe

With the sell to buy and one in one out it's not a massive leap to list those 4 areas if willock/gordon are peddled then trips gone/ramsdale sent back its basically just replace who goes.

 

Still think we need more areas but might not be immediate first 11 improvements beyond those 4.

Not that I think there is anything in the Bruno/Chelsea talk (Tonali maybe), he'd flop (relatively) there.

 

Bruno the package is so much more than Bruno the player and they'd just be getting the player.
