Will post my brief rationale for being underwhelmed.

After getting Bruno, then Isak and now Tonali (who is arguably the biggest transfer this club has made since Owen from Madrid), I was expecting more than Harvey Barnes.

I understand the transfer if the are wheels in motion on moving on ASM/Almiron, but not just to pad out the squad.

As others have said I'd rather we splurge on a proper left back. Gvardiol might be a pipe dream, but he would have been perfect as he operates on the left or as a centre back and has the profile of the players we've been getting in recently..

It's no surprise you are underwhelmed if you thought we might sign Gvardiol.

Any player who gets linked to Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal or City, we just aren't signing.

There's no surprise we dropped out the Szlob race as soon as Liverpool showed interest.

Barnes is less exciting than a Diaby but it might just work out a smarter move for us.

The new club coaching structure have proved in a very short time they know what they’re doing. If he comes he’ll be a successful addition to the squad with the role he’ll be trained to undertake.

To be honest, I get quite anoyed about this Maxi love that keep poping up. Regardless of Barnes I would drive Maxi myself to whatever. He makes us a worse team and we can bebetter of him. Flair? thats not a thing in the 20s. just look at Man City. You need the skillset but the output and efficenty is way more important. being a selfish player and your out from City. Should be the same here.

Before Leceister imploded last season, I reckon most people would have been more than happy with Barnes. It's still quite hard to explain how they went quite so badly wrong.

And of course, us overperforming as well has had everyone looking skywards. I think, though, if you look at him less as a replacement for ASM, but more a replacement for a squad player (regardless of positions) like Ritchie, it makes far more sense.

I do think you'd need a Trippier style LB to get the most out of him, and that starts to become the priority position to me. No shade on Burn there, but I'd rather a specialist, with Burn as cover there or at CB.

I also still think we'll have at least one more surprise signing coming out of the blue as well.

I get quite annoyed about you tbh.

We've got like 50 games next season. Having Barnes there for when we have a Thursday-Sunday and we need someone good to come in, is smart business.

Exactly, if we get 3rd in our UCL group and qualify for Europa League, and let’s say we get knocked out in the quarterfinals, that’s 12 games. Don’t forget that we got eliminated super early in the FA Cup last year, so we can add about 4 more games there as well.

So that scenario means we will play 16 more midweek games! Yeah everyone in the squad will get their playtime.

Fun with stats says he's got three goals and three assists in just 661 minutes as a sub. Small sample, but very impressive, almost cheat code level.

He's also scored 9 of his 35 league goals with his weaker (left) foot, off 9 xG. Hitting xG off your weaker foot is pretty good. The highlight reel has him going down the outside and scoring with his left.

Just for the "is a CL player?" issue, aren't his stats better than Trossard's?

I didn't think we might sign Gvardiol, but he's in the same category of players as Tonali, Barnes isn't.

Flair the most useful of skills in Football Manager. How often is he going to score an accidental goal from a cross? WHAT A GOALLLL -- DID HE MEAN IT?!

he’s really not though is he? 1 maybe 2 good games in 38, runs into blind alleys, losses the ball consistently then sits on the floor for 5 minutes, doesn’t score or create chances or goals, he really doesn’t offer much TBH

Yeah (I got your back)

Still calling bullshit on this link until some others stand it up.

So far we have the telegraph and other than that journalists talking about "reports", which just refers to the telegraph anyway.

Nowt from Edwards, Hope, Downie or any other journalist to confirm these reports to be true.

I almost feel bad for them, they clearly have no fucking clue what's going on and can't comment on things like this one way or the other as a result

It seems thay we are targeting players on relatively low wages - Barnes rather than Maddison, Tonali rather than Barella etc.  IMO its a sensible tactic - the alternative is you quickly end up like man utd or chelsea where everyone that signs expects 200k+ a week.  Building slowly and deliberatley isnt just about transfer fees
