You would imagine if given the choice, Howe would like to do a deal where we bring in Barnes and use the money from ASM to fund it. But at the same time, it will hardly be a disaster if the deal doesn't happen and we end up playing ASM instead for another season. Hence we put what we think is a fair value on Barnes and wait to see if something can be thrashed out.

Headline yet again misleading from what the actual article says.

Always the problem with the media and why you should by and large ignore the headline and read the article. Unfortunately most people tend to do the opposite and get irate with journalists for no reason as it’s a completely different person with different objectives that produce the headlines.

It's the journos fault for putting their name to it, Edwards knows what he's doing. Absolute Grade A prick.

It doesn’t work like that. Journalist writes article and sends it in. Someone else decides on the headline and depending on contract stipulations will sub edit the article itself.

You can imagine if Maxi does take the cash and head to Saudi, the price for Barnes would shoot up exponentially. Can't imagine Leicester happily accepting £30m if they see us land £50m for ASM.

Well I think there's also something called professional integrity, which Edwards clearly has none of.

That’s why I would expect ASM to stay this window or move very late in it after the Barnes deal if indeed this is all true and not a smokescreen.

“There is nothing to stop them also bidding for players on Newcastle’s books but the Premier League will be watching to ensure any transfer fee reflects fair market value.

Given his age and the fact he still has three years left on his contract, the reported £50 million Al-Hilal paid for Portugal international Neves, who is the same age as Saint-Maximin, but only had one year left on his contract at Wolves, will be a useful benchmark.

Newcastle are wrestling with FFP restrictions and multiple sources have informed Telegraph Sport that they will have to sell players to balance the books, if not this summer, then certainly in the next two transfer windows.”

We all know we have to sell players at some point, but you can tell by that Mr. Edwards doesnt have a clue whats going on inside the club.

Obviously we'll have to sell at some point but I just take everything in the media these days with a pinch of salt. They use the media to their benefit.

This maxi story could just be a way for clubs to think we've got no money left unless we sell first.

It’s how the business works. LE or any other journalist just write the articles. Quite often they will see the headline the same time as us or not much prior. Doubt there’s many journalists with that sort of editorial power these days. Dying industry in many regards.

No one does, it's just educated guesswork. But some stories make more sense than others, this one definitely feels like it's based on real possibility if you believe that Howe really does rate Barnes, and I reckon he does.

No sympathy for him, he's a cock. End of. His articles are shite anyway, even without the headline.

If the decision is to sell Maxi when his stock is low to fund signing Harvey Barnes then that’s straight up dumb as fuck. Some fans have developed a weird narrative around ASM for the last season and seem determine to see him as shit. The stats only problem is perfectly illustrated here because Barnes on paper is way better but doesn’t cause the opposition the same tactical alternation Maxi causes.

It’s such a backwards step. Before people say trust Howe/Ashworth Liverpool were the best team in the world for a couple of season with fantastic recruitment then made some dumb signings. Mistakes can be made.
