He didn’t look out of place in our back line so it will be interesting to see how we plan on developing him.

Can he play in the youth CL? If not age we buy a CB you have to loan him - had a good game today

Peak Dan Ashworth this, and something I think we’ll see a lot more of. The home nations will be a regular destination for us in terms of youth recruitment and if someone like Murphy can step up this season it will have been an early success.

Step forward lad, noticed he was on the bench for Ireland under 21’s last week, so he’s not injured.

In light of Schar’s injury, Howe has hinted at more minutes for the teenage defender – who is in talks over a new deal – and praised his ability to play in multiple positions across a back four.

“Alex (Murphy) has been impressive in training”, Howe said. “I have been really pleased with him. He’s been with us all season, near enough, and he has grown and developed into a really good defender. He’s very comfortable on the ball.

“He had a little cameo last week and with Fabian’s injury, it maybe gives him an opportunity to come into the team. He’s versatile – he can play in both positions (left-back or centre-back). Anything down that left-hand side. But with Fabian’s injury, he would probably be the one to shift over to the right as well.

“If we can sign young players and develop them – Alex came to the club recently for a really good deal for us – that’s another part of the transfer strategy we need to use.”

Plays left back as well eh? Hopefully we’ll soon have a squad where every player can fill in at LB

Pardew would be in his element at his selection for 70th min subs.

And they’ll all get picked ahead of Lewis hall- “with so many injury today i might pick Lewis hall providing jimmy the janitor doesn’t turn up as ill give him a go there first”

Should allow us to release Dummett this summer if we see him as a squad option.

Good season for him considering his age, made a good audition in pre-season and got himself a few first team cameos.

Hopefully he can show he's developed this pre-season and be a useful depth option for us. Rather an up-and-coming like this lad come in and maybe make a mistake they can learn from than the likes of Dummett who will make the same mistake and always be crap.

Shame about the injuries to Botman and Lascelles because I think Murphy could do with a loan spell out to get a year of first team football under his belt. I can see us wanting to keep him round as an emergency option until January.
