There are some pubs open from 6am ?. But anyway, there is alcohol being served in the stadium with fans arriving there from 10am so plenty of drinking time for those who want to.

Bloody hell which pubs are opening at 6 like?? Even so the waiting around and the very slow stop/start drive down to there will sober people up anyway which I suppose is kind of the idea.

I always remember Middlesbrough away when Cleveland police would drive us around Teesside for an hour before allowing our buses to head to the ground for the same reason!

My local in Felling used to regularly open very early for away games. The landlord arranged the bus and aperitifs and no doubt the benefits compensated for the risks !

Well I know our away support back then was a lot better than it is now so maybe that wasn't a bad thing. Was talking to a mate earlier on there who was at Anfield yesterday and said the away end was pathetic yet again.

The drink and the football always went hand in hand for many fans so your impression is wrong. You don't need to prioritise. You can have a good drink in the pub with your mates and then go to the football.

Well not on Saturday obviously.

You don’t need to prioritise it I agree but like you say your friends have sacked it off for this very reason which means they have chosen too.

The buses were used in 00’s like I said and atmosphere was fine. Helped we won every time it felt.

They can still have a drink at the stadium pre during and post the game. Surely that is sufficient? Especially for such an early KO?

Those whistle-stop tours of Cleveland were great fun … especially having to put the cans away due to the escort.

They were delusional in any case if they thought anyone would be wandering around the Riverside looking for a local pub.  Rough as guts that place.

No need anyway. If you wanted to alter your consciousness, just take a few deep lung-fulls of ICI's finest local air, but just hope it's not quite enough to make you go all Zaphod Beeblebrox and sprout you an extra head.

It is a beautiful part of the world. Can’t forget the image of that moment when you first see that shimmering town on the banks of the Tees:

Think it's about as obvious as it gets that we'll lose this tbh.

That's my impression too. I know its very different for folk who work alongside mackems but I don't care any more. My biggest concern is the potential (manufactured) over-reaction to this result, not the result itself. We are not far off self-feeding pressure on Howe. Huge scrutiny of everything he does.

Its much better to take one step back than one hundred steps back. The straw that broke SBR's back was Hasselbaink punching the ball into the net. That's what little things can do. It set us back years.

Aye I'd prefer the local and English players to be "up for it" and the likes of Botman, Bruno, Joelinton, Isak play their own game. If that happens we'll win easy.

It's the likes of Burn and Longstaff we need to see raise their levels back to last season.

Also worried about one of their players (can't name any, sorry) being too yo for it and snapping Miley's leg or something after he skips past them.

He's called O'Nien.

Dirtiest bastard in their league.

I'd say less than half used the buses that the club put on. Most either went on their usual supporters buses, train or metro. Used to have 2 dedicated Metro services that would run straight through without stopping, plus a couple of Northern Rail services which would also stop at Heworth.

Drinking out of a plastic cup at £6 or £7 a pint whilst others are chucking their beer all over the place isn't for everyone either. Many people just prefer a nice pub.

How do we still have "fans" that come out with shite like this?

It's becoming more obvious that people are starting to forget how to support the team, or is it just some kind of cool edgy quote so you can come out with the "I told you so, ITK" rubbish?

Couldn't agree more.  Then there are the supposedly Toon fans that brag about placing bets on sunderland to win.  It leaves me completely gob smacked.

Was always rougher than Sunderland was Boro. Much worse. Remember going to Ayresome Park when we beat them in the League Cup and it was genuinely scary! One of only 2 times I've genuinely been scared outside a football ground. Contrast that to Sunderland away 2 weeks later when O'Brien scored the free kick and the mackems just kept out of the way. Strange thing with Cleveland Police was that they would go to all those lengths to segregate us before the match, often meaning we missed the first 15/20 mins (I remember one time once they finally let is in it was already 1-1!) and at full time they would let us all out together

Was there. Total wild west outside. I can't remember being frightened but I do remember repeating to myself "just get on the bus, Niall"

Glad I wasn't half cut and had a modicum of wits about me.

I suppose it's different if you aren't local with the "banter" before and after with mates, and work colleagues etc, and yes we should be aiming higher and not worrying about these.

However, you cant just ignore the years and years of local rivalry, its mad to think otherwise.
