Liverpool vs. Newcastle United: 1/1/24 @ 20:00 (Sky Sports)

Bizarrely, I think this is the perfect tonic... for a few reasons.

1. It doesn't derail a good run of results.

2. When confidence is low we might as well get Anfield out of the way.

3. Playing a quality opposition often raises focus/standards going forward.

4. There's zero expectations.

Looking at it, this is our hardest fixture in the second half of the season (Emirates aside). Get this fucker out the way and the only way is up.

Also, if Eddie wants to experiment, Anfield is the day (Gordon and Miggy are fucked):

                   Dubravka

        Schar   Lascelles   Botman

Trippier                             Livramento

   Longstaff   Bruno    Joelinton

                Isak         Wilson

Give Isak a free role to run the channels, which is where Liverpool are weak.

I wonder if Eddie has figured out a plan to stop their runners getting in behind us? Even before Forest tore gaping holes through our midfield, Liverpool have made a habit of getting in behind us when we push too many forward leaving our defenders chasing shadows.

The defence Howe put out against Forest was too slow to cope with their pace in wide positions. We need a better plan this time to make sure there is less open space for the likes of Nunez, Salah and Luis to attack.

some cause for optimism...

last time we went to Anfield it was a pretty patched up team, without Bruno, ASM and Wilson, while Botman stayed on the bench and Isak was making his debut, yet we should have really won it or at least drawn

(Isak's disallowed second was a brilliant goal that should have stood imo)

This time we should have Isak, Bruno, Botman, and Gordon starting, hopefully all fired up for this

knocking Liverpool off their perch would be so sweet

Is Lascelles back?

I don’t think trying something new is a bad idea

I had been putting the whole fatigue thing down to the injuries we had but we were pretty much full strength when we played these and we got knackered at around 70 mins. They took full advantage.

At the current state of the squad, we’ll be toast by the 35 minute mark.

The SJP game was flukey as anything, and I wouldn't dwell on those particular 90 minutes.

However Liverpool are the strongest team in the league in the second half. They've only conceded five second half goals in 19 games. They've scored 15 out of their 37 goals in the last 15 minutes.

We have conceded 7 in the last fifteen, nearly double any other 15 min period of games.

Can see us scoring first here and trying to cling on, but it won't work

It barely ever does.

Any team needs to offer a threat at the other end of the pitch or it'll end badly more often than not.

They have massively improved since then.

They beat Man Utd 7-0 last season at Anfield, while this season they drew 0-0. They are more stable this season, but it's mostly their away form that has improved. Their home form is similar to last season (meaning they were really good at home when we met them last season).

Eddie definitely doesn't change formations and generally doesn't rotate never mind experiment. He appears after two years here to be tactically as inflexible as it gets.

Seems strange given he took a year or more out of the game to educate himself and address his weaknesses. Doesn’t feel like someone who wouldn’t be thinking hard about how to solve every single problem we have.
