Meh if he doesn't want to join then he's not the right player. As for Chelsea let them at it, another big wage in a position they don't have a great need, another potential source of friction in the dressing room for an inexperienced manager to deal with and can't be great for their compliance with Uefas wage cap though I'm not sure if it has any teeth to it. Can see them trying to offload him next season for FFP purposes as he'd represent pure profit but nobody will be interested in paying his wages if he flops.

It's a shame for the fact he wouldn't have cost anything and that would've freed up money to be spent elsewhere. The fact he's gone to Chelsea where he'll end up on their scrapheap in a year or less is even more disappointing.

Also think the majority of the budget will go on the right winger, which is why we were trying to get Tosin on a free.

Said it before and I'll say it again - Chelsea don't sign players, they acquire assets. Assets they can move around, sell as and when required without the merest thought about developing the player or any kind of long-term system. Tosin will drop into that squad and be tried out a few times, he'll then either play regularly or be sold on for a huge profit. If he plays regularly then they'll probably cash in on someone like Disasi instead. Either way Chelsea will make a huge amount of money signing him. Whether he's what the team needs is irrelevant, whether he improves as a player is irrelevant, how he copes at a much bigger club is irrelevant - he's just become another Chelsea asset. His decision, his future

Personally think you're better off without and focussing on upside players.

 

I get the concept of raising the floor of your squad but even with a free I'd be looking for more potentially and this looks short-sighted. Just two years down the line and you'll be looking at his wages and wondering why one of your top earners is a fringe defender and one you can't shift as no one else will want a 29 year old on top whack - unless Everton and West Ham are still round of course.  Players who come on frees are not exactly free - wages add up. 

 

A consistent Dougie target fwiw has been Ronnie Edwards and it's still possible he's on the Palace list - think there is an upside there and if the worst comes to the worst a player you can comfortably move on on pedigree alone. Grow him for a year or two and you might have an England level CB as that is what his record still suggests he can be whereas with Tosin you'd be getting someone who has topped out and been shown to be middling at the top level. 

 

Pay him a standard salary and give him a 3 year contract sure. But that's not why he chose to become a free agent..

If they sold him on (which would imply he didn't play much), it'd be hard to make "a huge profit" if they're paying him say £7 million in wages a year. If he hadn't been playing that would lower his stock too. And if they were loaning him out because it didn't work out, they'd potentially have to pay a chunk of the wages to enable the deal to happen.
