There’s no incentive for the selling side to agree a low fee so early on in the summer. They’ll want to smoke out other bids. It’s why stingy teams like Tottenham tend to do their business so late in the window. That's why managers and boards are often singing from different hymn sheets. It was Eddie who has asked for the deals to be done quickly, but the players he wants are usually overpriced, so with PSR tying one hand behind our backs, unfortunately we have no choice but to haggle the price down. Which means it will drag on longer than Howe would like.

I do wonder if some posters have ever bought a house let alone one in a chain Unless you can afford to pay over the odds or one of the biggest salary paying clubs then transfer windows will always be hard going forward when looking for players that fit our remit and improve the 1st team greatly. andycap Posted yesterday at 13:57 Share Posted yesterday at 13:57 I'd be wanting atleast 20 million for Longstaff if this is the way teams value there players he's only had one good season in the championship and they want 40 million. 😂

The Burnley goalkeeper had agreed to join last August only for the deal not to happen, much to the surprise and disappointment of some of those involved. However, sources have expressed extreme confidence this week of the transfer going through at the end of this season, with Trafford still set on St James’ Park. The 22-year-old is in the midst of an astonishing 11-match run without conceding a goal, moving beyond 1,000 minutes since he was last beaten. That run included a pair of penalty saves during a goalless draw with Sunderland last month, ingratiating himself with Newcastle supporters who are aware of their club’s interest in the Cumbrian. One complicating factor that had been mentioned was Manchester City’s buy-back clause. They sold the player to Burnley for £19million two years ago and it is thought a fee in excess of £40m was included as an option to re-sign him. But sources have played down the possibility of that being an issue and say all roads still lead to Tyneside, regardless of whether Burnley win promotion.” “The fee discussed last summer was £16m and, while it will take more than that this time around, Trafford has only two years to run on his contract. Newcastle scouts have continued to watch the England Under-21 star extensively this season and his ball-playing attributes are seen as key to the team’s long-term evolution.“ Good times. It all depends on demand for a player at the end of the day. If there are a few clubs eyeing up Longstaff we might well get £20m.

Sometimes you need to pay the price because the benefits of owning that thing now can far outweigh the benefits of saving some money but then possibly not getting that thing. Howe’s heavy insistence on speed of action has me rather spooked, I’ll admit.

Tonali’s removal changed results and our defensive cover from a midfield perspective. Yeah so my point stands. He came in off games against Man City, Liverpool and Brighton. Of course we improved after those games. It was nothing to do with Longstaff.

It's not as if keeping Tonali in over Longstaff would have meant we'd continue to lose against Brentford, Sheff Utd & Burnley. I know he wasn't exactly brilliant in those 3 games but it was a massive baptism of fire to the PL against the 4 teams we had first. I don't even think it was necessarily wrong to not play him, I don't buy this line that results and performances improved because we started playing Longstaff, though. We just weren't playing the previous season's top 6 anymore. Edited yesterday at 15:57 by Optimistic Nut
HawK Posted yesterday at 15:52 Share Posted yesterday at 15:52 8 years ago Pickford was on a similar trajectory to Trafford and went for 25-30m. I'm not saying they're the same player, but 8 years later... 30-35m for Trafford seems a snip.

Obviously he's a mackem with teeny tiny arms, but he has proven to be a top keeper nonetheless.
